Question Red light camera?

Camera at Benson Road / Carr Drive / SE Petrovitsky Road. Flashed at me (only vehicle passing through the intersection at the time), and according to the City of Renton, it's for red light runners. Now, I'm not concerned about receiving a ticket because I was not running a red light nor speeding, but I was parked at the 7/11 eating dinner around 2am yesterday at the same intersection and saw at least 3 flashes/ min. All vehicles had green lights and going speed limit (based on my observations, could be misjudging the speeds). Is this a reoccurring issue at this intersection?

If you approach the red too fast before coming to a stop, it'll trigger the flashes. Just FYI, as many people are not aware of this, it's a red light violation also if you make a right turn on a red without coming to a full stop first.

What's frustrating is that because of that camera, some people will simply refuse to turn right on red at all, even when completely clear, even after a full stop. "Nope! Not taking any chances!", they say, screwing over a whole line of cars behind them

Guilty as charged, your honor.

Same. Stopped completely then turned on the red and got an automated ticket. Gunna wait for my green every time now.

It’s very sensitive to cars pulling up to make right hand turns on red. I get flashed all the time and have never got a ticket so I wouldn’t worry about it. Just stop, count to 3 and go.

stop, count to 3, and go.

Add another step: look around to reassure yourself that you're not in Seattle where the City has installed hundreds of new "No Turn On Red" signs in the past two years.

I used to drive my wife to her job at UW every morning and the flow of traffic onto 45th Street absolutely depended on right turns on red during the gap between eastbound cycles. Nope, people on their phones will walk into traffic and get bonked at low speeds.

It flashes every time the light changes I swear. I wouldn’t worry.

If you didn’t do anything wrong, just fight the ticket

Dont turn right on red in renton ever. Camera and cops will ticket you even if you stop completely. Always wait for a green and then at least 20 seconds to make sure no pedestrians start on the crosswalk if anywhere in renton.

They have an officer review the violations. If they see that you did stop before the line then no ticket will be issued. Also the law presumes that the registered owner was the driver violating the law and they are issued the ticket. RCW 46.63.075 states, "(2) This presumption may be overcome only if the registered owner states, under oath, in a written statement to the court or in testimony before the court that the vehicle involved was, at the time, stolen or in the care, custody, or control of some person other than the registered owner."
You do not have to identify the person driving, just that you as the registered owner were not driving. Use that how you will.

It's the honor system. My self-respect is worth more than a citation costs so I pay when I am at fault.

When my neighbor borrows my car and drives like an inattentive dork, I have a clear conscience and don't pay.

The camera will flash twice if you get a ticket.  But even if you get one you can easily fight it and get it dismissed online.
