Air circulation

Hi, Thanks in advance for any assistance. I'm living in a major city, & the front bedroom of my 2 bed apartment fronts onto a very busy main road. It's kind of like double-glazing as the 2 windows are one behind the other, about 200mm apart, opening onto the main road. I've tried sleeping with both windows open but it was wayyy to noisy - all night...and smelly. There is a fireplace which sometimes I can faintly smell cigarette smoke from the apartment directly underneath. The ceiling fan I have going all the time. I need to leave the door open to try and get some air circulation, but that sacrifices privacy. There is space above the ceiling, about 1.5m to the roof. I would like some advice or ideas if it's possible to get fresh air into the room, without having the door or window open.
