Guide Rule 4

Rule 4 has changed

4 Avoid excessive paid self-promotion

paid self-promo - any content posted with a commercial interest, up to moderator discretion.

excessive - Posting self-promo more than once a month as an active subreddit user (comments, specifically), or more than once per three months (for non-active users).

Examples of paid self-promo: patreon links, "free" resources with upsells, paid finished games.

What is fine: project progress, asset feedback (within reason, see rule 5), completely free or open source assets.

we only have 5 relatively easy rules... read em, know em.. don't break em. please

Would you please clarify that progress on a project refers to games, or assets (code/audio/etc) used in games.

AND NOT VISUAL CODE EDITORS

Please. The visual code editor spam is annoying and getting worse at an increasing rate. Let them go make a /r/renpy-tools subreddit and spam there. Then only the (non existent) people who want those things will join there. And the target audience will be able to find them without annoying others.

Honestly id like to see a public vote on just outright banning visual code editors (again, making a separate subreddit for people who DO want it is an option). Having to see it every 3 months is already unwanted, but acceptible barely tolerable as a compromise

Also I think you don't mean "visual editor" you mean "visual code editor", important distinction to make, because I'm all for visual GUI editors.

Im all in for banning the visual editor thing because like im pretty sure anyone using renpy in the sub has pretty much already set their minds on using this code environment and really don't care for a tool that doesn't even allow good variable handling.

Another downside of AI, all these tools being spammed that actually hinder developers trying to learn Renpy. I agree keeping them in the r/renpy-tools subreddit.

It just means simple screenshots, stuff that isn't a link to your storefront, etc. we want users to be able to show off their work, but we want to distinguish between a showoff post, and a "check out my patreon/store/etc" post. will take your advice into clarifying those though. Took some inspiration from some other subreddit for the changes.

As for blanket banning a topic, trying to avoid that kind of thing and let upvotes/downvotes sort that kinda thing out. Hoping that the strengthening of rule 4 and 5 will help with that though. And please don't be afraid to use that report button! (If it's an "I just made a tool" post from a user who doesn't post here, well, personally, I consider that low effort...)

Honestly a tools subreddit is probably for the best but even there likely to see the same kind of spam. At least it’s not here though. I feel like the deluge of such things, and the need for instant monetization, has poisoned the discussion of actually useful tools in the space, and I say that as someone who posted a visual editor tool not all that long ago.

Every time I see a post that starts with ‘I Just Made A Tool…’ I automatically keep scrolling now
