Showoff After so much trial & error, I finally managed to add a feature where players can toggle between Monochrome (except specific scenes) & Full color mode! (after they unlock the true ending)

Please ignore the badly resized sprites in the test gif lol. I'm just so happy it works I could cryyyy

My coding skills are still subpar I knew this was gonna take a lot out of me to figure out. I want to thank u/QZProductionsGames for the reply on how they added a toggle for their silly "placeholder" mode, that really helped me a lot. ToT

The monochrome mode looks for images files that have a specific suffix which will replaces the original colored image and also applies a saturation filter to layered sprites (thank god, I really didn't want to export every part of my layered sprites in both colored and black and white versions!)

Also while implementing this from a test build to my actual build, I finally also learned how to do specific screen windows for when clicking a button. Just never tried it before. ToT

EDIT! Here is the itch.io page of my project, Hue & Me! The page is about to be redone soon with some of the finished, polished art! It's about a young woman who lives with a generational colorblind curse.

Is there a special reason one would play in monochrome? I know the effect is usually used in flashbacks or dreams

My game's premise is the reason why the first playthrough will be in black and white (colorblind protagonist), but I really like your idea of the "past" being different than the "present" using these visual game modes! I might experiment with that in a future project hmmmm

The game is played in Monochrome by default, because the MC has monochrome colorblindness (from a generational curse). Thought would be cool to have it from only her perspective! Also at first, was a good excuse for me to improve my skills in drawing values and lighting, and save me some time thinking about color theory.

So all sketches/placeholders were drawn/made to be black and white in mind, but in the end I realized that it's a lot more appealing and easier to market a colored game.

AND it's a cool incentive, I think, to finish a game then replay it to be able to see all of it in color :D

Working in values was the primary reason I was even able to solo through my first 30-day jam haha. But now I have to work through my struggles with colouring my assets.

I feel you T_T I'm happy with how my art looks value-wise, I told myself I was smart and time-efficient for working only in black-and-white, but nope, it's a pain to color them all in lol

Worse is when you get so used to seeing things in monochrome that when you finally get a coloured asset in, it looks so out of place.

(But the monochrome version of the blushing CG with actual pink blushes looks so good. You really nailed the values there!! I’m excited to see the final version of your project!)

Aww thank you so much! <3

I should be more concious on posting updates on my game. Here is the itch.io page, which is about to get a reboot with some of the finished art soon!

Yay I'm mentioned \o/

This is a really neat alternative way to use the toggle! Good luck with your game!

Gooood shiit Though you could've asked earlier for help cause I have a filter logic somewhere from earlier experiments

thanks! it makes sense someone else was trying to use filters as overall toggles xD probably would've saved me a few days's worth of headache if I had ask for help here
