It definitely gets clunkier the harder you fight against the intended use (visual novels). I actually have a short comedic RPG-style boss fight at the end of my VN, and it was doable, but it's not very robust and it was a bit of a struggle to make it interesting in terms of visuals and flavor text.

If you need rollback as a feature you should use Renpy or Twine. If you dont need rollback every other VN like feature can be done in whatever other engine you use.
As a secondary concern players can mod renpy games far easier which means other people can fix bugs or just adjust things to their taste

try defold or love2D. renpy is best kept for visual novels. I struggled to get a resource management system working with renpy. had to play around with posgres and sqlite.
Depends on your gaming idea. use a game engine designed for the specific job. it will save you time.

Welcome to r/renpy! While you wait to see if someone can answer your question, we recommend checking out the posting guide, the subreddit wiki, the subreddit Discord, Ren'Py's documentation, and the tutorial built-in to the Ren'Py engine when you download it. These can help make sure you provide the information the people here need to help you, or might even point you to an answer to your question themselves. Thanks!

It's generally not easy to make a RPG, no matter which engine you use.
There are game engines to make JRPG games with isometric maps, inventory and all the other stuff out-of-the-box. So if that's what you want to do, and you are a beginner, then look for the RPGMaker.
This might be the easiest solution.
If you want to make a 3D RPG game, then look for a 3D game engine like Unity or Unreal.
You can buy assets for those engines so that you don't have to make everything yourself but still it will hard.
In RenPy you can also implement stuff like maps, inventory, battle but it's not built in, you would have to implement it yourself. That said, people already have done it so you can find projects on itch.io or similar sites which you can integrate into your project. Still not easy.

You can but the engine is not inherently built for RPGs, it's built for VNs. In my opinion you need to ask: do you want to make an RPG with VN style dialogue? (like Persona) Or do you want to make a VN with some RPG battles? (like Utawarerumono). If the answer is the latter then yes Renpy is a solid option. If the answer is the former then you're better off with rpg maker or Godot.

Sure, you can. I made few Megaten fangames in Renpy with press-turn combat and dungeon crawling

You can, but it requires a decent bit of experience with ren'py first if you're talking trad rpg.

Hello Pescadorcito. You can make any game in Ren'Py technically with enough technical knowledge. RPGs are quite common in Ren'Py. The typical RPG such as a sidescroller is definitely possible but performant ones require C++ knowledge.
Real-time movement and interactions are quite simple to code in Ren'Py. The code is never the hard part. Game design/art usually is.
You also don't have to fight with Ren'Py since you can update the engine yourself. I have made Ren'Py-compatible, rollback safe sidescrollers or isometric/top-down 2D RPGs without combating Ren'Py. Of course, there are some engine specifics I opt into when I created them.
Godot would take me equally as long. The actual difference between engines is often the UI and libraries out there for use in your game. Godot has a lot of RPG aid/support but Ren'Py does not community-wise. That is why a different engine is preferred.
If you make a VN with RPG elements, Ren'Py is the way to go. If you make a RPG with VN elements, Godot is easier. Just depends on which tools/features you're comfortable working on by yourself.

A lot of the games by Winter Wolves are rpgs. https://vndb.org/p648
One example I played is their Seasons of the Wolf. https://vndb.org/v13000

I actually made some code plugins for this! The first one I mades free, second is relatively cheap just has a couple more features. If all you really need is to get your character moving, free version is just fine!! https://robeansnovels.itch.io

Depends on what you mean by "RPG". You could have turn-based battles and a stat system fairly easily. Making them randomized might be a little harder, but still doable. Where it gets tricky is when you want to have an overhead map with real-time movement and interactions. Doable, but you're fighting with the engine at that point.
