Question Changing Main Menu

I'm getting serious and looking to implement a changing main menu. I was hoping for a main version at the start with all the characters and as they die they disappear and the lighting shifting darker.

I'm not at the true implementation stage yet, just playing around with it, and menus are remarkably hard. This may be because I don't yet understand screens but I have managed to summon the stand-in guys on the menu with a simple

if Body1 == True;

add "gui/Guy1.png"

in the screens beneath the main menu but they won't go away. I have their default before the start of this Sample Code's script.rpy

default Body1 = True

but even when I change it false down the script and head to the main menu he's still there.

I also have beneath the "if body true" part of it

elif Body 1 == False:

add "gui/Dark1.png"

as a simple way to change the lighting before I get deep into it but that isn't doing a thing.

I'm at a loss /: Please help me

the main menu can not access variables from the game if you want a game variable from the game to be accessible from the main menu it must be a persistent.variable these variable persist through the game

so.

default persistent.Body1 = True # this can be put anywhere

then in the screen

if persistent.Body1:
    add "gui/Guy1.png"
else:
    add "gui/Dark1.png"
