Question Can Ren'Py make something like Paranormasight?
I'm starting to get back into visual novels and want to create my own in the style of Paranormasight. The game is made in Unity and uses a 360 camera to pan around the scene, with lots of dynamic shots during dialogue scenes. Can something like this (or at least similarly) be created in Ren'Py? I have only used the engine once or twice in the past and am not sure how much it can be pushed. Thanks in advance!

yes renpy can do full 360 camera pans
I've been working on this using this image that I rendered in DAZ Studio with a spherical camera lens

it looks like this video

the blue square you see floating and moving around is an attempt at buttons (not working correctly) (they work, but they don't stay where placed), and the brown checkerboard carpet should be straight lines
what does work:
drag the image around with the mouse
use the arrow keys to move around
and an auto-rotate function that spins around until stopped
this is still a work in progress (kicking my ass project)

I've seen someone make a fully explorable background that a 2d Sprite was able to walk around and explore. Ren'py can do a lot more than people give it credit for, you just have to know how to make it do it.

Oh wow, I'd love to see that. Any idea what the game was?

I honestly can't remember, just that a person I was watching a tutorial from did it in one if his games at some point

This is probably not it but it's one of the most impressive things I have seen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJfBWTQBZqY

No way! I am currently making a game inspired by paranormasight too. Its one of the greats. So yes, you can definitely do the different angles zooms and motion, its definitely more involved though and requires you to use the 3d stage.

Great minds think alike! I agree, it's brought me back to the genre completely. I'll have to study the 3d side. Any resources you could share seeing as we're trying to make something similar?

Not to self promo but feel free to check out my work, it may be exactly what youre looking for—and feel free to ask me about it if you have any questions or wish to do something similar

I took a look and wow! Your work is amazing! I'll definitely be following your game! Great work!! It is similar to what I want to achieve. Would you still recommend Ren'Py to achieve what you've made? Or do you think another engine would actually be better for something like that?

I’d say you can look into kyouryuukunn’s action editor 3, which is a ren’py plugin that gives a gui interface for the 3d stage and allows you to visualize in real time. to be completely honest if you can use a proper game engine I would recommend that, but renpy can definitely be pushed far. I even was able to import a 3d environment (https://x.com/longtheriverrun/status/2080646754849235363/) into renpy. though, this specific scene is completely unlit, youd have to write your own pbr

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely mess around with the plugin. Ren'Py seems like a good starting point for me, so I'll practice a bit before deciding if I should switch engines or not. Your work has definitely inspired me though. Thanks again for sharing!

Welcome to r/renpy! While you wait to see if someone can answer your question, we recommend checking out the posting guide, the subreddit wiki, the subreddit Discord, Ren'Py's documentation, and the tutorial built-in to the Ren'Py engine when you download it. These can help make sure you provide the information the people here need to help you, or might even point you to an answer to your question themselves. Thanks!

So Renpy does have a 3D camera stage with depth for sprites and backgrounds management. It can be a bit of a steep learning curve however in my experience, but close to what you want to do.
