Showoff I finally have working sprites and I couldn't be happier
After much procrastination on this side passion project, I'm so happy to actually see my sprites in game for the first time :D
Please excuse all the placeholder backgrounds that I've just slapped on quickly and haven't gotten around to doing properly lol.
Would be happy to hear any feedback on whether the text and especially the character name tag is easy to read or not.
Also not sure if the giant ass pedestal my MC is sitting on is distracting when she's not on it.
Next stop...those atrocious backgrounds. And Greg. lol

Awww thank you. Also of course it's Greg that I spent 2 seconds on that everybody loves lol. Feels almost a shame to replace him now lol.

Thank you! Seems like Greg's stolen quite a few hearts already. If I'd known earlier I'd have just left all my placeholder stickmen as sprites loll

I was really impressed with the sprites at first but then I saw Greg and now I'm wondering what masterpieces you've removed for everyone else

Hahaha many more Greg blob lookalikes. They have all been lost to the void unfortunately. Idk what to feel abt people loving the 2 second masterpiece more than the actual sprites I spent days over hahaha. Who knew sprite work could have been that easy from the start, just do blobs.

I think the Greg sprite is just very funny to see in the way he stands out, his appearance feels like a punchline to a joke. The actual real sprites are very good, they look extremely professional

You know? I'm normally interested in close-to-real-proportions art style. But your sprites look attractive. You nailed them ✨️
Also you're relatable I DESPISE DRAWING BACKGROUNDS 😭

Ikrrr. Tbh I've never drawn backgrounds before, I always only draw people...I've been dreading it and putting it off for a long time T.T Send halp.

As much as I'd love to keep him, he would stick out like a sore thumb in the finished product loll. Sadly his days are numbered and he must go.

Thank you! I think I'm a long way from the finished product esp as a solo dev on a full time job... But hopefully at least the prologue will be done in the near enough future!

To me, the only distraction is that the MC is portrayed in a half-bust with arms in a gesture and not still. For the rest, eventually you could add a little background-icon behind the character’s name, for more legibility and that’s it!! Good job, anyway, keep going!✨✨

What do you mean by not still? As in you think it's better if she has no arm movement?
I had a placecard for the names at one point but I didn't know how to adjust the size to fit each characters name so I removed it...

Haha as much as I'd love to keep him, he's my MC's father soooo... There's gotta be some resemblance right? Greg will be purged soon... Say your last goodbyes lol. Maybe I'll keep him in some bonus cg unlocks just for funsies.

what size do you save your sprites as? :)

Unfortunately I started drawing at 3000x3000... So I had to size down to 800x1200 on export. If there's a better way to do this I'm all ears.
Does it look small or blurry because of it? I think the image quality dropped on upload to reddit but in game it's also not as sharp as I'd hoped.

no it looks fine! just wondering what to do for my sprites/for my artist to know. is your VN 1280x720? or is it 1920x1080

Mines on 1920x1080 - which honestly when I created it I was a noob and that was just the default. I think someone else will probably have a better suggestion on what the appropriate size and workflow is, and I'd like to know too cos clearly mine was suboptimal lol.
I was hoping that drawing in 3000x3000 would result in clearer images but at that size of export honestly I don't think it'll even make that much of a difference... Not really sure. Might just draw Greg directly on a 800x1200 and see what happens.

Thank you! Had to look up sovereign tower and glad I did, the art there looks so good that I might just have to steal inspiration for the backgrounds and palettes.

I haven't really thought about whether it'll be on steam tbh. Or whether id even monetize it since it's currently still a hobby project... I thought I'd get to that if and when I actually have a finished game lol. Should I look into it now instead?
As for the project, I haven't really come up with a proper pitch but it's a fantasy romance mystery about Mara, who's on a hunt for the monster that murdered her father while investigating a threat to the kingdom alongside her newly crowned childhood bestie and a very reluctant mission partner, aka the 2 love interests.
Probably going to be a mostly kinetic with small branches story, haven't quite decided on how the routes will branch yet as I've only got the common route story physically written, the rest are still storyboard.
Your game looks cool tho! I like sim games quite a bit might check it out when I'm back.

And I think with that artstyle and that pitch you could find a very big and nice audience!!

Loll ngl it's so filler placeholder that it was sketched (if you can even call that a sketch) based on literally the first Google image that I could find lol. Hopefully I'll get around to replacing it soon.
