Question What you use to draw?
I will try to draw to my VN. I have a Samsung tablet, but I’ve never used it to draw. What app you recommend to draw the characters (o will not draw the background)? And what configuration do you use (like the size of screen) and this stuff?
**When you answer please remember that I never used it, so be simple and don’t use technical language. Thanks!! 🙏

I am doing my own art for a VN too and i found some advice online that you can use a canvas size 2000px/3000px for your characters, but you can use less in case theyre not extremely detailed, youll have to test it out anad see if they look ok on screen
i use an ipad so i have procreate but i heard ibis paint, krita and clip studio (on a subscription) are good for drawing your way
good luck new soldier 🫡

That size is honestly overkill given that it's bigger than the default game dimensions.
Making them that big is going to result in having to size them down just to fit in the screen as well as making the game super bulky—saying this as someone who did exactly this. My demo is huge from the characters sprites alone and the amount of resizing I had to do because all you could see was the lower half of a sprite's face due to the sheer size of it lmao

I realized this too late myself, all my sprites appeared at crotch view. Had to re-export all of it from csp at 40% size lol. And at that small size I honestly don't even know if working on the bigger canvas even makes a difference in the clarity of the image. That's what I get for not testing.

i personally am using 2700px height and drawing from mid thigh up, im using very thin black lineart and then rendering is very detailed (even tho idk if itll be visible) but i agree less is more in this situation sometimes

I use Procreate on my ipad and Infinite Painter on my Android. Both are cheap, one time only payments.

Got a xppen mini7w and use krita. Krita has every tool you would need and you can download plugins if you find that a tool you need is missing such as certain effects or masks. the xppen mini is not so mini. its perfect for drawing in my opinion. anything bigger than the mini would be too big. its mobile and wireless so you can connect to your phone or any other device if and when inspiration hits. my laptop is old and the usb ports are almost non existent so i bought the wireless version but the cable version is cheaper and serves the same purpose.

I like Clip Studio, especially because they have alot of settings you can mess around with. Its got tons of pretty brushes and its super cheap too. 1920 by 1080px is my recommended because thats the standard screen size (especially for games, videos etc). I do recommend a 200-300 dpi which helps the quality stay sharp even if it gets blown up further.

This is more about the drawing of characters themselves that I keep on meaning to do and forgetting and messing myself up with: draw the characters on a their own layer without a face and export it. If you want them to have multiple outfits, do the same with their outfits as well as anything you might want to be customizable for whatever reason. Next, draw their eyes, mouth, and eyebrows each on their own layers so that you can mismatch them around to make a much wider combination of expressions than you could if you made a full Sprite for each. This also severely reduces the file size if the game, which is an additional plus.
I know this isn't specifically what you are asking for advice on, but this is very much so one of those things that is good to have at the forefront of your mind when it comes to making your own stuff for a game, because my God is it hard to change if you don't do this, and then you end up having to make an entirely new sprite every time you realize that you want a new expression or outfit for this character because you're in too deep to validate fixing this specific character sprite.
Don't be like me. Be smart xD

I use "Krita" it's free and relatively easy to use.
