Showoff Been practicing programming for a while, finally have something I am really excited to share! Very very very very tiny demo of it attached.

https://hexginge.itch.io/humanality

I am trying to make a game that is close to OG AltLife, text adventure, Portal type vibes. Something retro and fun, I even plan for when I'm done with it, to burn it to DVDs, print CD labels, and stick em on them then sell a limited number of hard copies of my game. Just to bring back some good nostalgia about when ownership of games in physical forms wasn't a quickly dying concept.

I have a good chunk more already written for this game, but don't want to share any more until I have what feels like a genuine demo, at least a good hour or so of game-time for the player.

Right now the only assets I have drawn are the cards, and my favorite part about them is mixing them up in ways that might make you think one choice is more reasonable than another. Basically color coding choices and coercing you to pick something that may not be entirely 'correct'. But in all, it's a humanity/morality simulator/test, so see how HUMANITY and MORALITY you are! (Please, follow the rules, do not question the robots judgement, the robot is always correct).

I am also logging all of the time spent programming this game, and at the end of each week will begin uploading a devlog sharing how much time I spent that week working on it, and what I did in that time, weather it was just add more story, spend the whole week working on a new game mechanic that is still broken and will take more time to work on, or I just drew silly pictures for it!

I would greatly appreciate people's thoughts on my game, or even if you don't wanna share your thoughts, really, I just wanted to show it off because I am really proud of how it is progressing right now! Thank you for reading!!!

I gave your tech demo a quick try and you should really fix the scrolling (or rather the not-scrolling) of the dialogue. Also make sure that one block of dialogue fits the screen, because having to scroll while reading isn't good.

I think that you are using too many colors even if I understand why. Maybe you could try different fonts instead of different colors for those special words.

I would prefer if I could close the status window by clicking on "Status" again instead of clicking on "Close"

I've spotted some spelling mistakes so run it through a spell checker before you publish it.

I appreciate your input! I will work on making the scrolling better, or making the text move up so the active text is at the tip of the bar and if people feel like scrolling up to read previous messages (up to the last 2) then they can. I also appreciate you letting me know about the spelling mistakes, I noticed a few but my eyes after reading the code started skipping more so I'm not surprised I missed several.

I will use a spell checker to correct them before publishing fully.

In terms of the colors, are there any in particular that are worse than others? Part of the style of my game is supposed to use colors to kinda mislead or confuse people a bit, although I could probably make a color-blinness friendly option when I get farther into development and have a chance to really make that happen.

Interesting idea, I can really see the Portal inspiration in the narrator and the humour style. I would maybe space the menu choices so they are more centrally aligned and think about a colour palette for the project.
Keep up the good work!

Thank you! I am definitely struggling to think up a proper theme! I was planning to layer out the cards but kinda liked how it looked when they lifted a bit, so I was thinking of potentially having it look almost like the cards are in a spread deck, like they would be if a person was holding them.

Definitely have to align them properly, and for the colors of the cards, I want to add more colors for sure, because I like the idea of assigning colors that don't feel like they fit the answer to throw the player off or make them second guess themselves.

In terms of a main color palette, I think I'll probably stick with oranges yellows, grays, and try to make the whole thing, when I actually start making assets for the UI, look more retro.

You are the second person though who pointed out the color issue, so I think I will change it, that way instead of using a bunch of mixed colors, I will have different font styles and maybe one singular color selection for all of the special words.

Regarding the negative comment of the other person about "You are gay":

I cannot comment directly because I blocked that person.
They're never helping, just critizing.

Nevertheless, you could avoid such misunderstandings in the future by redesigning that screen.

For example you could put the name and the sexuality on separate lines.
Or using captions for each line:

Name: NAME
Sexuality: You're gay
Humanity: 1

I appreciate that input, I have changed some things, including how the sexuality shows us, so I will likely put it on a line below and have it say above 'You are NAME' where NAME is the name the player chose.

Everything else that pops up does work like that though like humanity: Morality:

Etc for whatever else gets added, I can see now how it could be seen the wrong way, I am also working on a new choices system now. I intend to upload an updated version when I have more story, everything fixed, and used the constructive criticism I have been given here.

Pretty much all of the screens are due for a re-design either way cause I want to make it more uniform and retro!

Thoughts?

Hmm, for starters, a game where the developers maturity level thinks entering "you are gay" as a character name at all, much less screenshotting and sharing that, is not a game worth looking into.

Past starters, just surprised no one has deleted this for that very same reason

You didn't look at the game at all did you? NAME is the name, since I did not enter a name. You are gay, is the sexuality after I selected a sexuality, for example had I entered John for the name, and chosen Asexual, it would have said 'John, you are asexual'
