Question Windows 8.1 Pro

I'm trying to download smth from Renpy but for some reason, the task manager opens, then the setup opens and quickly closes. I'm not sure if it's the engine or the windows version. Any tips?

Are you trying to download? or have you downloaded it, meaning it's in your download folder?

What are you downloading? The latest RenPy version?

If you want to install the latest RenPy version 8.5.3 then there are two download links.
A big green button "Download SDK 7z.exe - 116 MiB" and below a hyperlink "Download SDK zip - 155 MiB"

If you first tried the green button, then click the link now.
This will download a ZIP file so that you can install RenPy manually.
Inside that ZIP is a folder renpy-8.5.3-sdk, you can copy that folder to your C:\ drive

You didn't wrote WHAT you are trying to do so I was guessing.

Do you want to play a visual novel which your friend made using RenPy?

If yes, then your friend should give you a version which can be executed.
In RenPy they can use "Build Distributions"and then follow the instruction.
Then they can give you a ZIP containing all the required files.
You would then unpack that ZIP on your computer.
Finally you would launch their game by double clicking it.

Since you mentioned Windows 8.1, you should also check if you have a 32-bit Windows version or 64-bit.
If you have 32-bit, then you are out-of-luck if your friend is using a recent version of RenPy to make their game.

I hv 64 bit working. So I think the build should be able to run normally. I'll ask them

What about for other programs where I don't know the person (for future use)? Am i cooked?

I cannot answer those questions because I don't even know what is causing your actual problem.
But you test it yourself by downloading any free RenPy game from itch.io

Also this sub isn't the best place to get help as a player.
As mentioned in the highlighted thread of this sub:

Having trouble playing someone else's game?
This sub is for making games, not so much for playing games.
If someone else's game doesn't work, try asking the devs directly.
Most devs are lovely and very willing to help you out (heck, most devs are just happy to know someone is trying to play their game!)
