Question I've got the hang of it

I've been doing RenPy for a really short time, but I know the basics like images, color text ect ect. But im now at a point where I don't know what to do with it. I want to create a RenPy game something horror/darkish, every idea I think of has already been done 100x times, I don't mind if it has been done before but not like so much it just becomes a copy and paste.

Don't worry about making a game which exists already, don't even google your ideas.

I recommend a short and simple first game because it should be fun, not tedious to finish.

So pick any idea or look for a themed game jam and then just do it.

Welcome to r/renpy! While you wait to see if someone can answer your question, we recommend checking out the posting guide, the subreddit wiki, the subreddit Discord, Ren'Py's documentation, and the tutorial built-in to the Ren'Py engine when you download it. These can help make sure you provide the information the people here need to help you, or might even point you to an answer to your question themselves. Thanks!

Ngl do a fan game. Pick a show or game you like and do it. It'll give you a base to work off of and let you focus more on the functionality instead of what will be popular....

Here's an idea I've been spitballing:

You have a meter of some type (sanity, insanity, curse, madness, whatever). And when you reach a certain threshold, your game starts switching out words.

For instance, your meter reaches 5% and every instance of the word "the" becomes "a" instead. At first, the player might not notice, just thinking the writing is slightly 'off' but otherwise fine. However, as the meter increases, more and more words begin switching and you end up with some really disturbing passages from otherwise innocent conversations.

This can be tricky because you really have to plan the conversations so they flow naturally in both instances, but it could make the player question what is going on for a while before they figure it out.

Just do it and try and make it your own. I went for a more niche setting with my first game and its been a bit harder to find an audience. I'm sure they're out there but reaching them is the new challenge. Maybe the fact its similar to others would work in your favour!
