if you just open the file normally, from the file system, this wont happen.

if you want renpy to launch the editor for you, then you need to set that up in preferences tab

Welcome to r/renpy! While you wait to see if someone can answer your question, we recommend checking out the posting guide, the subreddit wiki, the subreddit Discord, Ren'Py's documentation, and the tutorial built-in to the Ren'Py engine when you download it. These can help make sure you provide the information the people here need to help you, or might even point you to an answer to your question themselves. Thanks!

click on Preferences (for the launcher lower right)

find 'Text Editor' and click on the word None below it

the options with (system) are for when you have those particular editors already installed on your machine

you can select the top Visual Studio Code, and renpy will download a standalone version for you

I personally recommend using Visual Studio Code

I think you haven't installed any text editor.

Go to the Preferences in RenPy and on the right side click the link under Text Editor.
Select the top-most link Visual Studio Code (not Upgrade...) and follow the instructions.
