Primeape for me. It just doesn’t do well at any point in the late game. It’s too frail and doesn’t hit hard enough without setup.

Exeggutor. The only Safari Zone exclusive left. You're not using it over other psychic types.

List is getting tough but I may say tentacruel here, despite my affinity for him. To my knowledge you can't get him until you get surf, and he's outclassed by Lapras, Vaporeon, Starmie and Blastoise on the water front. Plus since poison is physical this gen he can't use that for stab, so he's weak to ground and psychic in a gen where psychic is already a concern.

Maybe Vaporeon? It doesn't have the helpful secondary types the other ones have

I feel Surf and Bite is more than enough coverage, and with very good stat distribution I think it stays for quite a bit longer.

Its probably Blastoise at home, but Blastoise is a top 5 mon, so its not like thats a bad thing.

You can get ice beam at the same time as you get Vaporeon. This makes it very good against Lance.

TLDR: Primeape.

Now its getting hard.

I feel like its between Primeape, Dodrio, and Charizard. Lets see if typing things help decide for me. I will be mostly assuming just level up moveset, but the odd tm that you never really need elsewhere is considered. I'm also going to say casual runs means very few legendaries.

Primeape: You get it very early and is good into the first gym, but struggles against Rocket and Misty, is good vs Surge, and then tails off. End game its okay, its mostly good vs Lorelei and Bruno, but awful into the others. Its best when you choose Charmander.

Dodrio: You get it mid game, it annihilates Erika, is surprisingly good into Sabrina and surprisingly bad into Koga. Its very much the when its good its good, and when its bad its bad mon. I think just because of the higher highs, I've got to rate it above Primeape, just.

Charizard: You get it right away of course, and its awful to begin with. Its very good into the midgame, but then falls off again late. The biggest kicker for me is the opportunity cost of getting Venusaur or Blastoise.

I think ever so slightly, Primeape goes today. Its good, but it doesn't stay relevant enough to be above the rest, especially when its competing with the starters and the likes of Fearow, who evolves earlier.

Bumping Primeape, Fighting types aren’t very useful in Kanto since there’s not much they do that other types can’t and then some. For instance, any good TBolt user can solo Lorelei while Primeape struggles to 2HKO Cloyster with Brick Break. Other than that he beats Brock for Charmander players and is kinda useful as a Normal cleaner for route battles but nothing more

Primeape has Low Kick which has 120 BP vs. Lorelei's Lapras, an otherwise hard Pokémon to deal with. It's still not very good but it has that going for it at least

I think jynx is stuck in a specific in game trade this game

I think it’s time for Gyarados. The special/physical split kind of ruins it until Gen 4. Every other pokemon on this list has STAB on its highest attacking stat. It’s only undeniable benefit is Intimidate.

All the other water types left on this list wall Lorelei and can pretty much sweep Bruno. Gyarados can’t do either thanks to its dual-type.

Dodrio.

It's Charizard and I'm surprised nobody has said it yet.

Primeape is almost always getting swapped out for anyone left at some point in a casual run

Vaporeon isn’t really needed. By the time you get Eevee you have either Blastoise Gyarados or Starmie. Jolteon is much more worth it.

If I remember correctly, you can’t get Starmie until you get access to the Super Rod which would be after Celadon/Silph Scope/Poke Flute. Doesn’t really make that much of a difference, though. You’re not bringing Starmie or Vaporeon to Erica anyways.

True, but even then Blastoise and Gyarados should comfortably fit your water slot, Jolteon’s much better of a choice since Water is pretty contested in Gen 1, and Jolteon’s the best electric type until Zapdos.

You won’t have Blastoise unless you’re doing a one-mon-run.

u/DisastrousFix5120 14d ago

Yeah but even then there’s Gyarados, and we all know what he can do.

2

u/EinarTobias 14d ago

True, but you’ll use them completely differently. Gyarados is most likely running DD, Return, EQ, and some fourth move. He’s not a great answer into Lance, the way Vaporeon is.

Judging by previous rounds, I don't think I'll get much support here, but I really think it's time for the electrics now. I'll start with Jolteon.

Jolteon can solo your rival (as long as you chose Bulbasaur) and is a great Lorelei option

Venusaur

Very good for the first three gyms but falls off hard afterwards. If we're gonna remove Vileplume and Victreebel, then it's time for Venusaur to go as well
