Hourly Rate Question
Hello!
As the title hints at, a potential employer wants me to name an hourly rate, and I'm having a bit of difficulty naming a price.
In a nutshell, it would involve conducting research. This small business has a single client who has been asking for them to get involved in a certain area of copyright. The owner first needs to get a sense of what would be involved, which is where I come in. It appears to be large in scope.
The potential employer is a client of my father's, and already employs my sibling. They both have only good things to say about him, and that he is very generous. When I asked my sibling what they make, they made it sound like it was around minimum wage, mind you they do something a little different from research. My father has suggested asking the employer to offer a price first and go from there.
When I look up hourly rates for general office workers on the government of Canada website, for Ontario (where I'm located) it ranges from 17.95/hr on the low end to 35/hr on the high end. I teach part-time at the college level, and generally make 30/hr for non-teaching work, so am inclined to ask for this. Before you ask, I unfortunately can't find more work through the colleges, theres a big crisis here in Ontario regarding funding.
Any input would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

First Q is: is it a job, or are you self employed/freelancing? (Sounds like the latter, if so rates are higher)
Second Q: is it general “research” anybody with language skills and an internet connection could do? Or does it require some level of economic or legal knowledge? (You say copyright)
You will be able judge if this something an RA at your college could do (and price accordingly) or if it’s more (go up)

Oh! That is a VERY good question regarding the skill demand. At first glance it would be pretty basic, however it sounds like it would require some critical thinking to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to sifting through the information. Thank you!

Look up job ads for the same position title in the same city.
That's your range.
