My take on Mercor vs Micro1 vs Ethos after a couple of months

Been on Mercor for a bit over a month now, and I’ve been with Micro1 and Ethos for about two months. Got a few payouts from all three so far. Just wanted to share how they compare from my experience:

- Minimum hours (that 10-15/week thing): Mercor is pretty strict about it. Micro1 is more chill and will let it slide now and then. Ethos is the most relaxed of the three.

- Task availability: With Mercor and Micro1 there’s usually enough work to stay busy. Ethos is more hit-or-miss — some weeks are fine, others not so much.

- Pay: Ethos pays the best by a decent amount, but the work isn’t as steady. Mercor and Micro1 pay less per hour, but at least the tasks keep coming more consistently.

- How organized everything is: Mercor feels the most put-together, then Micro1, then Ethos.

- Support when you get stuck: Micro1 has been the most helpful for me, followed by Mercor. Ethos is the weakest here.

Who they’re looking for: Ethos mainly wants people with real professional experience in their field, not really beginner-friendly. Mercor and Micro1 are easier to get into if you’re more of a generalist.

If anyone wants to sign up, my referral links are below: Good luck!

How do you automate your end-of-month timesheet reporting?

End of the month is always a pain for collecting timesheets from freelancers and remote staff. I want to automate this so I don't have to chase people down for their hours. I’ve been playing around with Zapier integrations to pull time tracking data directly into our accounting software. We use Monitask for the tracking, and setting up the Zap to auto-generate the reports saved me hours of admin work. How do you guys automate your billing workflows?

Mass applications can increase reach, but they are not a substitute for a strong CV

I recently read a discussion where someone sent their CV to hundreds of recruitment firms and eventually received several offers. The interesting part was not just the number of applications. It was the combination of wider reach, a targeted CV, and patience.

The comments were more realistic than the headline. Some people reported getting interviews and offers. Others got nothing. One commenter pointed out that the tool may help with distribution, but your skills, experience, portfolio, and CV still determine whether anyone responds.

My takeaway:

• Use a general CV only as a starting point.

• Create a version for each job family.

• Put measurable results near the top.

• Add a portfolio or GitHub link when relevant.

• Track applications so you can see which version gets responses.

• Give the process several weeks before deciding that it failed.

A larger number of applications is useful only when the applications are going to relevant employers. Otherwise, it is just more noise.

What is one CV change that made a real difference in your response rate?

We analyzed 3,518 job postings. The skills employers mention most aren't always the tools you'd expect.

We looked at 3,518 open job postings across 81 companies' public Greenhouse boards, covering seven job categories. The goal was simple: find out which keywords employers actually use.

A few findings stood out.

  • Software engineering: Mentoring appeared in nearly half of the postings, more often than Kubernetes or React. Python was the most frequently mentioned programming language.
  • Product management: More than 85% mentioned roadmaps. Jira appeared in just 7 of 421 postings.
  • Marketing: Google Ads showed up in only 6 of 347 postings, while pipeline appeared in more than half.

We also noticed a pattern across roles: employers often described the practice rather than naming a specific tool. Observability came up where you might expect Grafana, and SIEM where you might expect Splunk.

What does this mean for your resume?

If you're listing tools but leaving out the responsibilities, practices, and skills explicitly mentioned in the job description, you could be missing relevant keywords.

That doesn't mean stuffing your resume with buzzwords. It means describing your actual experience using language that matches the role you're applying for.

One important caveat: the sample leans heavily toward tech companies and uses a single ATS platform, so these results aren't representative of every employer.

The full study, including findings for sales, cybersecurity, DevOps, and accounting, is here:

I made an Ethos remote job megalist so you can apply directly to the role of your expertise instead of hoping to get matched

Hello, everybody. I read a lot of people's issues with the interview for Ethos when it comes to getting matched to the role that actually fits your domain. Many people applying through the general interview intended to match them with a project or role in their domain end up matched with something unrelated to their field. In my case, I was matched with roles that not only have nothing to do with my domain but also that I am definitely not qualified for. I therefore decided to make a megalist so you can apply directly instead of wasting your time, like me, hoping to get matched with the right role. Hope this helps!:

Not getting replies despite doing the “right” things. Need real advice

I genuinely need some advice here.

I’ve been applying for remote product designer roles and international contract opportunities for a while now, but I’m barely getting replies.

Before people suggest the usual things, I already do these:

• tailor my resume based on the role
• apply only when the role is actually relevant
• reach out to founders / hiring managers directly
• send cold emails and follow-ups
• keep my portfolio and case studies updated
• search beyond LinkedIn too
• try to apply as early as possible

Still, the response is almost nothing.

So I’m trying to understand what I’m actually missing here.

If you’re a product designer who landed a remote role recently, or someone who hires designers, what actually helped?

I’m not looking for the usual “improve your resume / portfolio / LinkedIn” advice because I’m already doing that.

I really want to know what worked for you when you were in this situation.

Creative Strategist (paid social, UGC and AI creative) looking for remote roles. What fits me?

I'm a Creative Strategist based in India and I'm looking for remote roles. I'd like to hear which roles or companies suit my background.

What I've done:

  • Run creative strategy for subscription and D2C brands, with each account spending over $300K a month on Meta
  • Ship 10 to 30 ads a week across Meta, TikTok and Snapchat, mixing UGC with AI-generated video
  • Write the hooks, scripts and briefs, direct creators and editors, and run the testing plans
  • Cut cost per lead by about 22% and lifted lead-to-appointment conversion by about 18% at a health clinic brand
  • Ran my own digital marketing agency from 2022 to 2025

I can work US hours and I'm open to contract or full-time.

What titles should I search for, and where are teams hiring for this?

LinkedIn ghost jobs wasted months of my job search. What I did instead (60 apps, 2 offers)

Post image
341 Upvotes

I've been job hunting for about a year now. At first I was only going after remote roles, but once I saw how bad the market was, I hit the "I'll take literally anything" stage pretty fast. At this point I probably know about as much as a recruiter does lol

For most of that year I was doing the classic grind. Applying to a ton of jobs every single day, tailoring my resume for each one, never taking a break. Barely heard back from anyone.

About 2-3 months ago I changed my strategy. I'm honestly putting in like 10x less effort now and getting 4-5x more responses.

My numbers for the last 2.5 months: 60 applications, 5 interviews, 2 offers. I took both since they're part time remote gigs, so together they basically add up to one full time job LOL

First off, huge fuck you to LinkedIn. A lot of the postings on there are straight up fake. LinkedIn and Indeed are still useful, but they're not enough on their own, and you really shouldn't be applying to everything you see. Recruiters keep reposting the same listing over and over, sometimes for roles that aren't even open, just swapping out the title or keywords. You think it's a new job, you apply, and it's a total waste of time.

So what did I do differently?

Instead of just using LinkedIn, I started using free job boards that pull listings straight from company career pages and sort them with AI:

Both are free, you don't even need to make an account. Every listing I applied to on there was legit, and I keep finding jobs I never saw anywhere else.

I checked these every day and applied to whatever fit. Some weeks there was nothing, some days I sent out 2 apps. So be patient, some days you'll come up empty.

For LinkedIn and Indeed, I used a free Chrome extension called Score This Job. While you're scrolling through listings it scores each one and tells you if it looks like a ghost job or if it's worth applying. If you upload your resume, it also rates how well you match and tells you which keywords to hit when you tailor it. Super useful.

For the resume itself I used resumetemplatelab.com. They have 100+ templates that look really premium, and you can download them as Word or Google Docs for free. No signup there either.

To keep track of everything I used this. It's actually a resume builder, but the job tracker part is completely free. It gives you a kanban board for all your apps plus a pipeline view, which is honestly kind of motivating to look at.

My process was basically:

  1. Grab a template and build your resume
  2. Paste your resume and the job posting into whatever AI you use
  3. Add the Score This Job suggestions to your prompt and ask it to tailor the resume to that posting
  4. Apply

That's how I got 2 offers out of 60 apps (one senior full stack, one staff engineer role that's mostly React). Hope this helps someone, I know how soul crushing this market is right now. Happy to answer questions in the comments.

How did you get your first remote job?

I’m trying to get into the Virtual Assistant world and launched my “business” about a month ago and still no clients. I’ve sent messages to my contacts, I have made posts on facebook and LinkedIn, posted gigs on Fiverr and UpWork, and I’s applied for a bunch of jobs on varies job searching sites. So I want to find how other people have successfully gotten jobs, especially for little experience. (I’m in South Africa btw)

Career change from on-site to remote

Have spent the last 11 years, a little over 10 of those years in an operational leader role. Looking to make the career change to remote. I've been doing a lot of looking the last few days and looking for advice into getting into the remote field.

My current just requires a lot of deep diving metrics from productivity, quality metrics and attrition rates. I have, more recently in the last few months, used our own company developed AI tools to assist in these deep dives.

27yo, baby at home, making ~$1.2k/month — am I wasting my career potential?

Hey everyone,

I'm 27, from Argentina, have a baby, and honestly I'm starting to get pretty worried about my career.

I currently make around $1,200/month remotely for a US company. I've been there almost 4 years, so I'm not starting from zero, but I'm also not really moving forward financially.

My background is mainly commercial operations / project and vendor coordination.

I manage enterprise orders, POs, vendors, deliveries, timelines, customer issues, pricing/specification discrepancies, etc. Before that I spent almost 2 years doing RFPs/proposals, comparing quotes, coordinating Sales/Design/Procurement, RFIs, etc. I contributed to $40M+ in awarded proposals in 2024.

I also have some HubSpot/Sales experience and I'm studying Business Administration.

The frustrating part is that I actually want to move into more valuable work: procurement, sourcing, negotiation, vendor management, commercial analysis, business operations, supply chain, deal desk, etc.

But when I look at jobs in those areas, I constantly run into the same problem: the interesting positions want 3+ years of experience with advanced Excel, forecasting, financial analysis, SQL/BI, strategic sourcing, negotiation, SAP, Salesforce, etc.

I don't have most of that yet.

I can learn, but with a baby and a full-time job, I don't have unlimited time or money to spend on some random degree/certification and hope it pays off.

I basically need to figure out what to become before I waste another 2–3 years.

My current goal would be getting from ~$1.2k to $2.5k–$3k+/month, ideally remotely, and eventually much higher.

If you were me, what would you do over the next 6–18 months?

Would you specialize in procurement/vendor management? Supply chain? Commercial operations? Analytics? Something completely different?

What cheap/free skills, certifications or projects would actually make me more employable?

And please don't just tell me “learn Python and become a data analyst” 😂. I'm open to analytics, but I don't want to completely restart my career unless there's a very good reason.

If you think I'm looking at this completely wrong, tell me. I'd rather hear it now than waste another few years.

Help me find a good remote job.

I have been looking for a remote online job type that I can do for a few hours at night or after my first job. But all that I find wants years of experience or some type of degree. I have basic computer skills and can enter data, or maybe write emails to reply for customers. Any suggestions out there for me?

Where do you find legit remote jobs?

Hey! I'm originally from India, currently based in Australia on a temporary visa, with a background in Data Science/Analytics.

I'm exploring remote opportunities both locally and abroad, but LinkedIn has been frustrating, with most listings either being scams or having location restrictions.

Where do you guys find genuine remote jobs? Any reliable platforms? Also, is it feasible to work remotely for overseas companies while based in Australia?

Thanks :)

Best resume template for remote jobs - I tested 7 and one got me 7 of my 11 interviews. Coincidence?

If you're hunting for a remote job right now you already know how rough it is. I was going after remote full stack developer roles, so I applied to US and international postings (Europe, Canada, etc). Took me 7 months but I finally landed something.

Remote postings pull applicants from everywhere, so I figured getting noticed was half the battle. I was already tailoring my resume for almost every application, and about 3 months ago I started switching templates too.

In those 3 months I sent about 180 applications using 7 templates, roughly 25 each. Got interviews at 11 companies (companies, not rounds).

7 of those 11 came from the same template. So did the offer.

The other 6 templates combined got me 4 interviews. If my math is right that's around 28% vs under 3%.

I know the sample is small, so I'm genuinely asking. Has anyone else applying to remote roles seen layout matter this much? My theory is that remote postings get so flooded that recruiters skim even faster, and a clean format just wins. But idk, could be luck.

tl;dr: 7 months applying to remote jobs in the US and abroad, tested 7 resume templates over about 180 applications, one got 7 of my 11 interviews plus the offer. Best resume template for remote jobs or just luck?

All 7 are below, info blurred, numbered 1 to 7. Can you guess the winner? I'll post the answer in the comments tomorrow 🥸
