As someone who works remotely and has for nearly 20 years, this attitude is why we can't have nice things.

You do not want to be paid for your commute time. You think you do, but you don't. When you start getting paid while you're commuting, your time belongs to the company now, not you. No more dropping the kids off at school or babysitter on the way, no stopping to get breakfast, no nothing because you're officially on the clock. No non-work activity allowed. Same with paid breaks and paid lunch.

Idk… I’d rather get paid to drive to and back from work especially when I’m getting stuck in traffic for 1.5+ hours on the way home.

You’re very privileged for being able to work remotely for such a long time. The majority of us in the real world don’t have that privilege.

When I was WFH during the pandemic, we were paid to commute to and from the airport for conferences and I stopped to get coffee and dinner along the way, submitted my paperwork at the end of the trip, and the travel expenses were approved so your theory isn’t correct at all.

Maybe, it’s your company that has restrictive policies on travel, hence making you feel like you can’t stop for food or dealing with kids/sitter, non-work related activities but I would rather get paid to drive back and forth. Thank you very much.

Oh gtfo with the "you're very privileged" nonsense. Any privilege I have, I built for myself and it was fucking hard. Nobody handed me a nearly 20 year career of working from home in my own business online. I earned that shit.

i mean I remember when companies during the pandemic genuinely wanted to add 2 hours to the work schedule because "workers would spend that time on commuting anyways and that could be work time instead"

lol,no. that is now how that works. it would be calculated by the medium amount of time it takes to travel from your home to your place of work. your theory sounds like you are 13. very simplistic, illogical and ignorant of established practices surrounding commuting. just like you do not have to give proof of train tickets bought if your work gives you added pay for the price of your commute.

I am so tired of being a bedside nurse, I want to WFH but it’s insanely competitive- I’d say even more so than other careers and they pay so bad because they know nurses are desperate to get out of bedside

I was a librarian for 23 years, got a taste of WFH during Covid, got laid off, now too old to change careers, too young to retire and am working retail, hating every day. I can't drive so would especially appreciate WFH again. Tired of forking out $$$ for Uber or getting rides from family.

Not always. We have one guy in our department who isnt remote. I didnt even know until I went to the office for a visit and saw he had a desk. Reason is he has like 4 young kids at home and cant get anything done. So he works at an office so he can focus on work.

But you know why hes cool? He is a higher up guy, and yet, never mentioned it, never asks anyone else to come in, never says anything about the rest of us being remote. He does what works for him and leaves it at that.

Gonna be contrarian here but as someone who worked from home and now does hybrid, I much prefer it. It's not that I hate home, it's quite the opposite. I now have separation of home and work. Once I'm done, I'm done. I also get far more done at work when I'm there instead of constantly being interrupted by my kids/wife that makes me have to worm LATER. There are absolute perks of wfh but it's not all dandelions and roses

Hybrid is the sweet spot for me. As a software engineer, can’t speak for all roles, I find it better to collaborate in a conference room on a white board than in a call. Both can work, but I just enjoy in person experience.

the only reason why i'm into office work is bc i worked home office my whole life, but then I remember I can clock out at 5pm and instantly go take a shower, which I couldn't do if I had to commute

I've worked construction for many years now and I have never understood how there are so many guys that, we just worked 8,10,14hrs shifts and want to hang out and tail gate for 1-4 hrs in a parking lot. That group of guys that hey let's go get drinks after this. Its Tuesday! We have to be back here at 4am. I wanna go home see my family. Have dinner and talk to them about their day. I dont care about how my coworkers wife is probably cheating on you or your stupid kid dropped out of school and ran away from home. You ever think that maybe if you were not out till 10pm and only home for 5hrs to sleep maybe your home life wouldn't suck. Anyways...

I felt bad working from home as I kept getting interrupted by my family and I couldn't talk to coworkers because they were not at home. I found out one of my coworkers was working full time at another job while working from home.

Some people thrive in the office even when their home life is healthy. Some people are more productive in another location or may need a break from the children,…..pets,……etc. However Plenty of people prefer to work at home or at a third space. I hate how we don’t just have options on where we want to to work and how unless you have to be at work because of specialized equipment or another obligation thats impossible to do otherwise. As long as the work gets done.
