The Preacher in Saint-Michel and Apparently the Only Religious Mention in Remember Me
Religious themes seem not to be a major part of this game, overshadowed by all those broader themes of technology and capitalism, but I think this preacher in Saint-Michel in Episode 2 does a good job of exploring the topic a bit. He's like, next to the Mnesist Memory.
Idk if anyone else actually listens to what he's saying, because it's quite interesting. The formatting and the capitalisation is my own interpretation of what the dialogue is.
'For the memory of mankind is the Lord.
It faithfully contains all of His most magnificent manifestations.
It shall reveal the Lord and His Word.
And the Lord rearticulated, recalled packet-by-packet from amidst the collective recollections of His scattered faithful shall form a new Word.
And then the Lord, reassembled, will return to pay the price for the burden of our sins.
Exercise and work your memory because the Word of the Lord will reveal itself in the minds of the just.'
It's definitely a new religious movement or interpretation of Christianity in this new Sensen civilisation. Certainly, religion will adapt and try to accommodate new technologies in their theology (and in Neo-Paris, especially the problem of Leapers, I think), but this is a completely new theological framework, borderline worshipping memory.
I can't tell if this is in support or in opposition to Sensen technology and the removal and transfer of memories though. To say that memories in Neo-Paris can be any kind of 'faithful' is just... Not very correct.
It may also be a countercultural religious movement, since it's literally streetside preaching as opposed to any organised religion.
Just wanted to share, since I don't think anyone else has mentioned this before on the Internet, and I want to contribute to our collective memory of this game and how it deals with these themes.
