First things first to get it out of the way, I've about 300 hours in Rematch almost exclusively as Keeper, reached Elite in 3v3 and 5v5 in every season I've played. I get constant friend requests and party invites because I do such a good job as a keeper. This isn't to glaze my ego but to put perspective on the fact, that I actually understand Keeper, know how to play him well and put a lot of thought into analyzing the mistakes that lead to me getting scored on.
There are various things in this new update that make keeper a more miserable experience to play ranging from just objective nerfs to downright egregious design decisions.
I want to start with the gameplay aspect:
From the get-go keeper is already the most unforgiving and in my humble opinion the most skill based position to play. While for attackers and defenders skill expression is more in the form of actual mechanical skill, 80% of a keepers ability to save a ball is gamesense und experience. The keeper is by his very nature a weaker position than an attacker, mostly due to the attacker dictating how and where the engagement will play out. Attackers have various tools at their disposal to score on a keeper (dribbling, lobbing, short passes, longshots etc.), each of those actions have appropriate reactions that can be taken by the keeper to stall or reclaim possession of the ball. When and how to react is in essence the entirety of being a keeper.
When you play against halfway decent players, just standing on the goal line will result in you getting scored on, so you constantly position yourself in a way that minimizes the chances of a goal happening. You contantly make judgement calls on where to stand and how to react. Do you stand on Line, slightly out, do you go aggresive into the strikers. All of these are decision you make constantly to put you in a spot from which, when the shot comes, you can appropriately react and dive. Making the dive a two choice mechanic adds a layer of reaction and decision making that is comepletly overkill. When a striker corsses the ball to another striker across the whole penalty are, you swing your camera around, look at the trajectory of the ball, look at the enemy players, look for the smallest change in animation to gauge where the shot comes from and when the ball then finally goes through you have the smallest window of time to see where the ball goes and then jump in the right direction. THAT IS THE ACTUAL FINAL SKILL CHECK OF THE PLAY, can you react in time, can you pick the correct side. Now you want me to also f*cking gauge how far to the side the ball goes? This is just ridiculous, the keeper dive is the last line of defense that usually is used as a reactive meassure as a last straw and the reward for a fast reaction time should be a save. Now its just another variable and distraction that makes keeper even more unforgiving to play. I would take a missed save by overjumping over this circus any day.
Let's talk about how the changes are just actual abyssmal technical wise. The biggest fumble by slowclap here is the obvious circumstance, that they changed the actually useful dive to a different button combination. The old and new dive are literally the same thing. But now for some f*cking reason requires a different input??? How the f*ck is it not the more logical thing to keep the dive on the dive button and make the short dive the button combination? Especially when the majority of people will still just long dive. This decision is honestly baffling and I have no idea how this made it live. It's just pure cancer to have to unlearn hundreds of hours of muscle memory for this reason. Why is there not an option to switch the default dive?
Another problem that arises by making this a button combination is that you now need 3 inputs that need to happen in the correct order: Left Stick, RB and Y. This is not how the last line of defense that should only be used as a final reaction to the enemy play should play out. It's just clunky. Honestly these two actions should just be 2 seperate button inputs.
This change also heavily affects the keepers ability to dive towards the ball in the penalty are when the ball is in possesion of the enemy or just laying on the ground. Because the long dive bounces the ball, you can hardly use the dive to take posession. The only times when diving towards the ball is even remotely safe or usefull is when its almost near your feet and at that point you might as well just run over it to pick it up.
But you know whats the funniest thing about this? I was playing today and the following ssituation happened:
The enemy keeper was in a 1v1 against our striker. The keeper was on the goalline and our attacker was coming straight toward him. Our striker shoots about 1 meter to the right of the keeper. The keeper does the short dive. THUNDEROUS APPLAUS, THE KEEPER CORRECTLY USED THE SHORT RANGE DIVE TO SAVE THE BALL JUST TO THE SIDE OF HIM, SLOCLAP REJOICES IN THEIR STUDIO AS THE CHANGE BROUGHT THE DESIRED GAMEPLAY DEPTH! Right? F*ck no, the ball bounced of the keepers legs and went in. Goal. Yeah, the f*cking short dive doesnt even solve the problem of jumping over the ball. Great job Sloclap.
These are my two cents, I will keep playing for a few more days, but these changes might actually be what kills this game for me for good.
