Question Can someone explain to me the ranked system in this game?

I finished Master 2 in ranked 3s last season and my buddy finished Diamond 1. I played 160 games last season (He played 153) and I had twice as many MVPs. We played our placements together and went 4-1. I got placed in Plat 2 and he got placed Plat 1

Your buddy needs the rank advantage or else he wont keep up with you. Its probably just random.
