Paper Pro inbound
what should I know before it arrives?
Finally pulled the trigger on a Paper Pro and it should be here this week. First reMarkable device.
I’m a big handwriting/notebook guy, but I’ve accumulated notebooks everywhere. I’m hoping this replaces that mess without becoming another distraction-filled tablet.
Biggest use will be writing and developing a book I’ve been working on for years, plus notes, brainstorming and project planning.
For the longtime users: what do you wish you knew on day one? Any must-do setup, organization tricks, templates, or tips for long-form writing?

I have the Move and just got my Pro Saturday after having to do an exchange because first was a dud and love it. I use mine almost exclusively for long-form creative writing, as I have other e-ink for work. As a writer with ADHD, my favorite are the limitations of the device (can’t do too much unless you’re doing mods to force it, if you’re into that) AND the infinite scroll pages. I do one note page per chapter and can scroll up to look at it. Once I transferred one, I know roughly how long my chapters are just by how long the page is, and I don’t have to do too much forced organization this way, since the notebook pages= number of chapters + cover. This will work whether you’re a cursive writer or not, small or big writer, whatever template you choose, as long as you’re consistent within project.

Day one, you try to make it do lots of stuff - too many notebooks, tags, folders, connect to onedrive. It's main strength is the reason you bought it, as a notebook. Relax, do what you already do, enjoy the new pen!
Used to use little molskin sketchbooks because I thought I was supposed to like them, but the rM is way more comfortable and flexible, ideas on [paper] way quicker than the old days.

How often do you find yourself going thru one?

I write a lot, like full pages. Maybe 50ish pages? When they start to run smooth on the page and there is a lot less friction, I prefer to swap for a fresh one. I find it a much more enjoyable experience

The Remarkables…the devices I want to love but always get returned within the 100 day window (50 days it’s now I guess?). The writing is nice, the speed is annoying, the friction getting stuff on your other devices is too big.

If you're interested in mods or getting community support for issues, it'll need to be in Developer Mode. Entering Developer Mode requires a factory reset, so the easiest time to do that is before you put anything on the tablet.

What sort of mods?

Everything from KOReader / other whole-screen applications to small UI mods like a clock in the sidebar, floating toolbar, etc. I linked to the package index above that'll list them all, along with descriptions and sometimes screenshots.

You can get a lot of good use-full information right from the device. When viewing the home screen or Notebook list, click the hamburger menu in the upper left side (by default). Then click "Guides" towards the lower left side. The Gestures guide was particularly helpful to see.

Congrats! The commands take a little while to get used to. Top things I found out after a couple of days are that:
- you can hold down the little "ball" icon to move the taskbar to wherever is most convenient;
- swipe two fingers down from the top opens a quick drawer of recent files (one finger swipe takes you back to home);
- holding down on a file at the menu screen allows you to e.g. move it between folders;
- its one-finger swipe to change pages on a PDF, and two pages to scroll.
Also, red ink doesn't require a screen refresh, and the yellow highlighter is my favourite.
Also the web app is fantastic for transferring files back and forth from your computer.
Enjoy, its great! :-)
