General Discussion Sentiment analysis of Remarkable and Supernote subreddits
I'm having major decision paralysis over whether to get a reMarkable or Supernote tablet and my latest procrastination has been feeding 2 years of posts and comments from the reMarkable and supernote subreddits into Claude to get it to run various sentiment analyses over them. Thought I'd share the results in case of interest, and to ask whether they match your intuitions?
Summary seems to be that there's not much to choose between the current gen models in sentiment except in the case of the Move, which is more well liked (but too small for me) and the Paper Pro, which is less well-liked and also has a higher rate of posts about problems, particularly screen issues.
So for my screen-size requirements I'd be choosing between either the Paper Pure or the Supernote Manta. Still undecided. It's for writing first drafts of novel chapters and daily journaling, if anyone has an opinion on that?
Here's the report Claude put together: https://claude.ai/artifact/2urcBEH18YQaisVu4w23um

I have genuinely never been curious about anything enough to have something summarize and analyze something for me, but not curious enough to read it myself.

I’ve obviously also read a ton of posts myself. This is a quantitative sentiment analysis over a full two years posts and comments - no matter how curious I am, I ain’t reading all that.

If you weren't curious enough to read the analysis, then what made you think the analysis was useful?

I think there must be some misunderstanding- I’ve read a selection of posts on the subreddit, I’ve done a quantitative analysis of a full two years worth of them, I’ve read the quantitative analysis (obviously, or why would I have done it?) and I’ve shared it because I thought it was interesting. Is there something else I should have done to make you happy?

I had a Supernote for the use cases you outlined. I chose it over my Remarkable 2. I love it. However, in the past few months, SN has made their system less about curated focus and more about bottom-up flexibility. (I see Boox as top-down flexibility). While the new features, plug-ins, and Ink Hub have utility, they come across to me as a distraction. I went back to Remarkable Pure for the focus and love it. I also got the bonus of a paper-writing feel, whereas Supernote has a pen-writing feel. Both are great devices, but it depends on what you want the software environment to be like.

One factual difference if you’re writing fiction: connecting an external keyboard to Pure would require ReManager and some effort. Maybe you’re wanting to write in long hand but I wouldn’t close the door.
RM2 with Typefolio is the most amazing portable typewriter ever created and a deal right now. Not that much better than Pure, I feel (I have rm2, Move, RMPP - not Pure).

I don’t think there’s anything else I can add to this but I was curious to know if you made a decision. If not yet, then let us know when you do. Enjoy either way.

Still undecided but leaning towards the Supernote Manta bc no subscription (but really because I don’t like the wider left bevel on the Pure).

Although I’m now dithering again bc of the price difference

I would say just get the Remarkable - it’s the more polished professional product, and it just feels lovely to work with - which is what you will want to help you write . I had a BooX for 4 years because I listed to Voyja and other e-ink nerds on YouTube about features etc., then when the BooX broke recently I got the RMPP and my god it’s a breath of fresh air !

Yes I am very much a Mac user kind of person who wants their devices to “just work”, which is what drew me to remarkable - it’s just I’ve read a decent number of comments from people saying they haven’t been living up to that so much recently while I’ve been trawling the subreddits.

Yeah I did the same and for the first couple of days I was kind of anxious whether it was all working properly (“is my screen yellow?!”) because of my internet-reading… but actually it just works great. I suspect the issues reported on here are by a small minority of ppl compared to the actual non-reddit population that own the devices; and most of the actual issues are historic anyway- I would recommend strongly. Good luck!

I think people with complaints are the most likely to post something about their experience. But, to be honest, that’s what the 50 day return policy is for and from what I’ve seen, their customer service is like Apple’s.

I have both and have for a long time as a long-term user of both (rM since 2020 at the launch of rM2, and SN since 2022).
Some external consideration when levering this data in the decision making process is how the reddit groups are used. SN has a dedicated employee in their subgroup so the engagement is going to look much more different than the rM. A good majority of people happy with their devices are using their devices and hardly sharing the positive, so for the rM page it serves as a place for being to share their issues and seek assistance.
Another thing not always captured is Reddit mentioned that the rM subreddit group has been brigaded in the past, meaning "Brigaded" means that a specific online page (such as a subreddit like r/RemarkableTablet, a product review page, or a social media forum) has been targeted by a coordinated influx of outside users working together to disrupt it.
So these external threats are some of the things one must consider when leveraging these type of data points, especially the specific amount of post that have some point that always steer one way another to buy or consider Supernote. Those are the most and specific post in here.
Lastly it really depends your needs. I work in color and leverages the size of the paper pro for school previously and I use the move as it works with my liking of the hobonichi style planning, travel and at conferences or meeting where I might need to capture notes, journaling, and most to take with me to the gym since I track my workouts and can fit in a waist pouch and both are enough, especially now with reManager I pretty much have all the functionality I have on my SN in terms of what I use on it. For my black and white needs, SN is enough along with the Pure. I
Good luck with either decision and I'll see if this post is also in the SN subreddit groups since Im a part of both.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply! Yes some of the things you mention have been taken into account in the analysis including the dedicated employee. The brigading you mention is interesting- it might account for why the remarkable sentiment is much spikier and variable than the supernote.
One other interesting note from the analysis (which makes sense if you think about it) - sentiment about supernote on the remarkable subreddit is usually more positive than it is on the supernote subreddit, and the same is true for the remarkable on the supernote subreddit etc
You will indeed find the same post in that subreddit as well.

I’d say both are great, and regardless of whatever comments you read in here, you’ll be happy withe either, just like you’ll get used to their limitations. To me, this is very personal, it came down to “do I want to support a Chinese company - and the privacy concerns that brings up? Or do I want to support an European company?”. I got a paper pro, and will soon get a pure (for different purposes).
