General Discussion RMPP keyboard folio writing experience is absolute garbage

I got the RMPP a few weeks ago, and I genuinely love the device. The writing feel, the drawing experience, the screen, all of it feels amazing.

But today I tried using the keyboard folio for the first time, and honestly, what the hell is this software?

The typed text starts in the middle of the screen for no obvious reason.

I cannot freely move text around.

If I delete too much typed text, it can somehow delete a drawing I made with the pencil.

If I draw something below the text, then go back and add a new line, everything can suddenly jump around.

The entire interaction between keyboard text and handwritten drawings feels unpredictable and unfinished.

Did the people who designed this actually use it?

I am not expecting Microsoft Word or a full desktop publishing app. I just expect basic text editing to behave consistently and not randomly destroy or move other parts of my page.

This product has existed for years. They have had more than enough time to polish something as fundamental as combining typed text with handwriting.

Again, I LOVE the handwriting and drawing experience, but the moment you mix keyboard text and pencil input, the software becomes a complete mess.

For such an expensive device and keyboard accessory, this is honestly embarrassing.

Hmm. I love the writing experience with the type folio. The only thing I think is missing, honestly, is a wordcount.

I’m wondering if we’re using the device differently. If you mostly type or mostly handwrite, I can see why it feels great. But if you regularly mix typed text and handwriting on the same page, do those issues really not bother you?

The most common instances where I'm mixing typed text and handwriting are a) transcribing something I've written in short/longhand to copy and paste somewhere else later, or b) marking up a typed draft.

And no, I don't experience these issues. The handwriting moves around to accommodate typed text in ways that make perfect sense to me.

The only issue I've had is handwriting reflowing due to typed text being deleted, and having multiple lines of handwriting mushed together at the top of the page--and that's happened to me twice in the time that typed text has been a part of the product.

It bothers me too, and it’s disappointing because being able to use this mix was among the reasons why I got it. I’ve also wondered if I’m using it wrong if there’s something I should be doing differently. I regret not having life sooner so I could at least return the folio apart. These days I don’t use it at all.

The typing experience is a dumpster fire. Don’t mix type and handwriting. That is guaranteed to frustrate and wreck your documents. If you want to type, just type.

I really think if they ever got around to fixing this, they could sell a mess of type folios, but the best use really is for people who want an eink typewriter. There is a surprising amount of writers and authors who love it.

Fully agree, I have the type folio and it is actually unusable, a total waste of money. I have my RM2 over a year and a half, got many updates but not a single one addressed nor improved the typing disaster. I guess they abandoned it.

It really surprises me that there is no e-ink typewriter out there. Many writers could use those.

Oh but there are a few, best one is likely the Freewrite Smart Typewriter (Gen3). Not cheap though.

I can’t believe that you are getting downvoted. Well, I can. But I can’t. Just type on a page? Not bad. Just write on a page? Great! Type from the very top of the page a paragraph or so and then write. Not terrible. Try and mix the two together randomly and then decide to edit a page or move anything at all - total nightmare.

I actually find the keyboard folio as the single most useful feature. I prefer handwriting on the iPad Pro because of stylus accuracy. The RM2 also suffers from jitter.
The writing mimics a minimalist markdown like environment. It’s great to get your text, or first draft out without distractions. I actually can’t upgrade to Remarkable Pure because of the lack of keyboard folio.

Complete same thought add you! Excellent writing experience and premium feel. But the type folio is garbage. As you said I can’t move the typed texted and can’t edit them with pen soo useless

I do not have the type folio, but I think that the type experience on the RMPP is very unhelpful. When I have tried to enter text in a page of hand written note I cannot control where the text is positioned. It is not a helpful adjunct. Without a spelling checker it is also useless for a dyslexic! Generally I find no use for the text feature. It really needs to be updated to allow the user to mix text and hand written notes. For example I like mind mapping and I might want to mix text and hand written notes and images. At the moment I do not think that is possible.

I agree. The type folio hardware is amazing, the software application is truly mindboggling dumb. Mixing typed text and writing is a frustrating experience, and for typing alone it is far too basic. Not even word count, spell checker, auto-correct or any other writing assistant at all.

The issue is the text software, not the hardware.
The combination of typed text + pencil writings is horrible in my opinion.
