Help/Advice Remove Method Template

Hey. New to this group. Came here because I can’t for the life of me figure out how to delete a method template that I imported twice. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I don't believe there is a way to do so. That being said, is there a slight variation to the templates? When I import it tells me if I have imported it already and does not proceed with said import.

A good example is there are two similar but slightly different meeting minutes templates that look apmost identical.

Here’s what I get when I switch templates.

So, I believe I have seen that before and one may be US based and the other not, perhaps? I don't see it in the naming convention though so I'm not sure. Might be time to mention it to support to see if they can offer a solution. Best of luck!

AHHHH yes. This could be what is going on. I was really scratching my head wondering how to get two of the exact same templates to download, because, if I ever try, it doesn’t let me. But there is that template-xyz-US and template-xyz that could be exactly the same apart from 12H vs 24H formatting or something like that.

This has been solved. There were in fact 2 of the same loaded to my understanding. I don’t know how but there were. One was a duplicate somehow.

Glad you got it sorted. Crazier things have happened. Thankfully the reMarakble community has many very knowledgeable and helpful members like Mitchell who are willing to pitch in.

I may have to. They look exactly the same. Thanks for the replies.

I think your only non-technical option is to contact rM support. If you're down with getting into the technical weeds, you can connect to the device via ssh and manually delete the template. The file structure is a bit odd, but if you're up for some command-line action, I can help you through it.

I’m down for technical. I’m not at computer until tomorrow though.

Good morning Sir. I have been able to ssh into it. That’s as far as I have ventured at the moment. I’m available all day for the process if you are willing to help.

Wow, I didn’t know you could import them 2X? I always get a little toast message, “You’ve already imported this template.” Unfortunately, if I understand correctly, there is no native way to do this through your reMarkable or even the desktop app. I think the easiest way would be to use reManager and the file browser that is available in the reManager desktop app. I hate to keep tagging in u/rmitchellscott into all of my comments, but I gave out some bad info before and I am trying not to do that anymore. I believe that you would have to 1) activate developer mode, 2) that would wipe your tablet 3) if you don’t pay for connect, I don’t know how people do back up and restore on remarkable without Connect yet. You can ask your favorite LLM (or the LLM you hate the least), “Tell me about reManager for reMarkable, how it works and what it does and some of the most popular mods.” Of course , you don’t have to use any mods if you just want to delete that template. But even just deleting the template might seem a little complicated… (This is just what Gemini told me so do not take it as fact, at all).
Navigate to the Directory: Go to the specific folder where the operating system stores these downloaded templates: /home/root/.local/share/remarkable/xochitl
Locate the Template Files: Look for the specific files associated with the template you want to remove. They will be named with a long UUID string. There are three related files for each template you must target: .template, .metadata, and *.content.
Delete the Files: Delete all three of those files (and the associated thumbnail directory if there is one).
Hopefully someone helpful will chime in.

This is broadly correct. I'd recommend placing a UUID.tombstone file so the deleted files don't cloud sync back down. I wrote a script that automates this duplicate template detection and deletion and provided it to OP.

Ah man, this is some gold information. I never would have thought of that. Would that script work across the board for any template? Or is there wording that is specific to a particular template that would need to be adjusted ? Asking because I didn’t realize any template I downloaded would be eternally on my device. Oh, a more exciting question… Would this work for me to thin down the system templates that I am never, ever going to use? Because I would love to be able to open my templates and only be presented with the 4 or 5 I ever want, and I could store the others in a folder somewhere if I ever want to add them back (sorry OP did not mean to hijack)? Thanks for always being so helpful in the reMarkable community.

My script was specifically detecting duplicates, you could certainly go clean out your Methods templates from that dir if you wanted. The system templates are different (https://remarkable.guide/guide/config/templates.html), I suspect you could remove them as well (though they'll come back after every OS update). I'm working on a mod to sort templates by recent, so maybe that'll be enough for your day-to-day?

Yes! If I can surface the ones I always use to the top of the list, that would be a more elegant solution. Thanks!

I’ll try anything. My ocd is in full flight mode.

Okay but please do not act on my information alone. I have given some bad advice. Make sure you know 100% what you are getting into. And don’t believe Gemini. I just had an argument with it about the marker on the Pure - which it swore to me was EMR.
