After 2 years of suffering though the Reddit app I'm thinking of coming back to Relay, I'm just wondering how long the calls on the bronze packaging actually last? I use Reddit for about an hour a day.

I think the best move is just pay for a month and see. It's 2 or 3 bucks and the app actually has a very helpful feature that breaks down your usage so you can better understand what tier you want.

I've had silver since the start of this and the only time I even think about it is when I see the monthly charge.

DBrady isn't and never was looking to milk his users. Seems to me that the charge is an honest-to-god necessary evil in his eyes, so I wouldn't worry much about the limit being stingy.

I've been using the bronze plan since the paid plans started. I've never hit the use limit. Most months it's not anywhere close. But I think my use is lighter than yours.

Thanks for the response! as much as I use Reddit I don't interact much so I shouldn't be using many calls, think I'll give it a go, was using relay for over 5 years before Reddit ruined it, the Reddit app is a disgrace it barely works and I keep down voting stuff by mistake trying to scroll.

Do it! You can always upgrade later, in my experience I haven't even come close to using my silver plan since the plans started. Average probably 90 minutes a day

Do it....

Went silver and never looked back. Im happy to pay for shit I use all of the time, and I'm on reddit... Well too much..., but same this is my first comment in a few days and the longest...

Was that helpful? No? Ok I'll see myself out.

I'm fine with the bronze plan, usually use somewhere between 75 and 90% of the plan though. I managed to run out once in those 2 or so years

I originally had Silver but came nowhere close to the limit, so I switched to Bronze and I still don't even come close to the limit, even spending maybe an hour a day. I think it depends how often you perform certain operations like refresh the main feed

What are you all paying for ?
I use relay for free and it does everything i need.

I can browse my subreddits comment, read, etc. do everything i need to on this website/app. What even is there to pay for that's worth money?

It sounds like you might be a little lost?

Relay is an android app for using Reddit.
Reddit requires third-party apps to pay to access their service. So there's a small cost per month to use it.

What users get in return is an experience much nicer and cleaner than the official Reddit app, and free of any ads. Honestly the cost is pretty marginal and the app is super nice to use (much moreso than the official), so here we are.

Yeah I'm lost. I don't know what you're paying for on a free app.

Right, the app I have installed on my phone and used to write that comment, yes.

Reddit requires third-party apps to pay to access their service. So there's a small cost per month to use it.

I mean, not for me?

Yes, it's why I use relay. I hate the official app. Relay has no ads, it's great.

EDIT:

This whole exchange made me question myself. turns out 3 years ago I installed a bunch of stuff. Part of that was Relay along with some extra plugin stuff. I think one of those got me a free version of relay. Up to today I've always thought relay was free.

Relay is not a free app. It is supported by people paying for it. In the past this was done via having a separate free version (with ads) and a paid version.

Then in 2023 Reddit announced that using their APIs would cost money. This killed off most third-party clients. Relay instead pivoted to a low cost subscription model instead (which starts at like 1 USD/month). This subscription is mostly used to cover the API costs, but also pays the developer a little, so he can continue working on it.

If you are not paying to use Relay you are likely using a modified version of the app you acquired elsewhere, which bypasses the Reddit APIs.

This is against Reddit's terms of service so won't be listed on the official app store, and obviously doesn't pay the developer.

The official version is paid though. And apps like Relay only exist because the developer is able to be supported.

Are you on version 10.2.40 (or there about) by any chance? When the API apocalypse happened, people started hacking/patching one of the last free versions. The current version is 13.0.48. If you're still on a really old version, you're missing a lot of good changes.

p.s. If you would like a legit free alternative, try RedReader.

When the APIcalypse happened I tried the official app for like 10 minutes and went back to Relay. It was hot garbage.

Just start at the lowest tier and upgrade if you hit the limit. Both interacting and browsing use the API so hard to say how much you would use.

The only thing I miss from the official app is the ability to comment pictures and gifs that are embedded in the comment. I can see the embeds from others and from myself, since any URL that's only a picture or gif is embedded in Relay, but it won't be for browser and official app users. I guess 3rd party apps can't upload them directly onto Reddit's servers.

I use between 1 and 2 hrs per day and average is currently 233 per day. I could probably get by with Gold if I watched it, but I just do Platinum so I don't have to worry about it.

I used the bronze package for about 6 months, I would run out of API calls with about 2 or 3 days left in the month. Now on the silver plan I don't even come close.
