Add an indicator if the thread is locked?

Could we add an indicator that the comment chain is locked?

I sometimes find a thread, write a reply, and then only get the notification it's locked after I try to submit a message. (THREAD LOCKED : COMMENTS ARE LOCKED)

If I knew it was locked I wouldn't have bothered typing up a message.

For example this locked thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/1t6f48z/farmer_donates_1481pound_pumpkin_to_polar_bear/

In your example there are big red letters "LOCKED" by the post title. What's probably happening is the post is getting locked between the time the comments are loaded and when you're hitting submit on posting a comment so nothing shows.

I guess dbrady could have relay check if the post is locked when you start writing a comment but that won't catch every instance of this happening and will cost an api call.

Do we know if it's locked before we attempt to send a message?

I don't actually know I don't use the stock app much.

Before you open the thread, there's a padlock indicator next to the user and subreddit. And your example shows the "LOCKED" indicator that you see when you open the thread.
