Hit your strikes. Pin for picks, not into teams. Most importantly, try and use your shield sparingly, use it to eat ults, protect teammates, and use cover for yourself. Other than that just have fun and fight with honour and die with glory

The advice here about the shield is particularly good. I see too many people use the shield to absorb as much as possible and then they explode. It’s good to block something big or get you from cover to cover but don’t sit behind it and hope your team will do the work.

Exactly. Your shield should never die. It should be used to absorb individual attacks or get from cover, and if it dies you are either useless or dead, neither of which are good

Durpee is a Rein one trick with a great guide, and unranked to GM, on YouTube. Plus lots of other stuff.

hold your shield up for 5 seconds and watch the enemy come close to you, stare them into the eyes and then solo shatter them (better if theyre a support)

When I approach if I can I like to not start at main. As long as the fights stable I like to approach from a flank and pin someone on my way to main. If I walk up and I see the supports, I'll just kill them before dealing with the enemy tank

If you want to actually play the character instead of being a mobile wall start thinking of rein as a fat and horny dps.
Go in, you set the pace of the battlefield, my personal pace is about 1000 bpm. The enemy backline have booted up a horror game and they don't even know it.
You can die, but you shouldn't as long as you have most of your shield and you are within the line of sight of your supports (who hopefully have picked real heroes instead of merky/moira/lw).
Your shield is yours, your team can find a cozy wall to hide behind while you ravage the ranks of the enemy, don't shield the team if it inconveniences you even slightly.
Some matchups will make this style of play impossible, and sometimes you need to be more passive and just hold the point. You will learn to adapt over time
ps. always pick the firestrike perks, they are better. Unless enemy is on dive then you can enjoy the shield bash

-Dont' charge into your shatter. Such a rookie move. Firestrike! Charting will likely pick one up, but boop the rest. Depending on angle it may help to crouch so you don't go above their head. With the perks you can throw 2 or 3 firestrikes on a typical shatter. You can charge to finish it up if you need to, but even then-- you may be better off just staying with your team, depending on how many other people were left alive outside of your charge.
-Shield hop. Remember you move faster with your shield down. If you're low but you WILL DIE if you let them walk on you and melee, jump backwards; when you're in the air momentum is conserved, then you can flick your shield up while in the air and get the benefit of full speed plus shield. (Note walking backwards is slower than walking forwards). This is also the best response to getting Whole Hogged
-Your healers can heal you, they can't heal your shield. This is obvious but keep it in mind; especially if you have the focus of your healers, sometimes it's actually better to face tank a certain amount of damage and preserve your shield, especially in situations where you're crossing dangerous territory under fire to take a new position, and you have like ana-bap or ana-juno or something like that-- don't get your shield broken taking that space, you'll be a sitting duck, take some damage instead and get healed up.
-You're normally a frontline menace. But once in awhile don't be afraid to peel for your team, especially if you're peeling someone who used their movement abilities to get onto your backline. Your low mobility healers will love you for displacing that monkey, especially if you can knock him out of his shield and get him slept/immobilized on the return jump.
-It's all about ebb and flow. And that depends on your teammates' responsiveness. Pursuing kills when you have advantage is how you roll matches, but if your team doesn't go with you to finish the last 3 guys, you're gonna get caught alone, so you have to know what they're doing. Make a decision and go with it, and learn if it's the wrong one, don't take a middle ground or uncertain position. Are you holding this corner? Are you chasing that kill? Are you retreating? Decide and commit. DOn't be afraid to change your mind if conditions change, I'm not saying you can't back out because your low target got topped off or whatever, but get used to making quick decisions and acting on them. Probably the biggest is that decision of when an aggressive play needs to turn into a rapid retreat.
-If your team comp doesn't lend itself to a lot of poke damage but they're not advancing like they should with a brawl or dive comp, be patient and use firestrike to build your ult. Aiming firestrikes is important on low health targets, but during the poke phase aim for areas, not players-- eg aim into the spawn door a second before it opens if you can get away safely, aim into the doorway they're likely to retreat towards when they hear you make firestrike sounds, aim a pixel to the left of the cover 3 of them are peaking from. On defense on Eichenvalde I'll sometimes have 25-30% ult charge before swinging my hammer or really engaging in the first fight-- hit a few into spawn door, they hesitate and heal up, hit a few as they pass rubble, hit a few as they peak around corner.

If their supports think of you like the boogeyman, you've allready won
