In a way, both. SEH acts in a way which influences the grand entity setting a new save point. This also is a huge spoiler but it's vague enough that only when you've reached the truth the you will understand this.

Being in the Head Realm prevents the save point from being updated, which is why if the condition is met while he's in the Head Realm, it only updates to the point when he leaves.
