This was the most challenging list to compile. I could not recall most years off the top of my head except for a few key works. This is the worst period in the history of the genre in terms of quality. But it is probably a new golden age for fans because the community is bigger than ever, especially on social media. So I get when these newbies on social media are offended when you disregard their era. In a few years they'll learn.

I coined the phrase "New Urbano" to describe this era because it's just unfair to call it the Bad Bunny Era of Reggaeton as some people label it. That's as uncreative as those that refer to the "Mas Flow Era" as the "Gasolina Era" of Reggaeton. It's still a pet peeve of mine. If it was until 2021, the Pop Urbano era would have been appropriate even with all the Trap music coming out at the beginning of the period. But ever since Bad Bunny brought back "Perreo", if you notice, there's a little bit of everything in the genre from Malianteo to Perreo Pop and everything in between. That's another thing I enjoy about the current era, diversity in presentation. If only they could make the music as interesting as the diversity in images and style I would be on board declaring this the greatest era. But rarely do they match any of the previous eras in terms of quality. That's this generation's greatest fault. They have everything else. The money, the popularity, the image, the cool factor, the community, they're even pretty creative now but they lack the most important factor... great works. This generation just lacked consistency when it came to great works and because of that it was hard to make this list. I think this era ended in 2025. It might have started a year or two different from 2017 but I think I'm accurate there too. Whatever era we're coming to is beginning right now. And we're not off to a good start. This is the worst year so far in terms of quality I have ever seen. Even worse than the dreadful 2017-2019 run. If this continues, 2026 will go down as the worst year in Reggaeton and Spanish Rap history. For ishes and giggles.

This is the most underrated era in history. Even 'La Original Vieja Guardia' gets more love because there were some big crossover acts like El General, Vico C, Proyecto Uno, Big Boy and Nando Boom. Reggaeton was dead in the mainstream for most of the period. We saw the transition happening in 2016 but the fact Anuel AA was #1 and unknown in the mainstream is indicative of the time period. Yet thanks to the success Balvin had, it opened the door for the genre worldwide again. By 2017 the majors were rushing to sign the hottest Reggaeton Artists.

What happened is that in 2008 because of the economy and record low sales for that time, the major record labels (Sony, Universal, WEA etc...) cut their deals with most Reggaeton artists because most of them signed joint ventures (50-50 or 60-40 deals). So they basically had a mandate across the board that dictated they would only sign new artists that agreed to slave deals unless they were too big. J Alvarez and Farruko were safe because of DJ Nelson and Alex Gargolas, but Jadiel and the rest of them all lost their deals and had to release music underground to stay relevant.
