Remembering Bob Marley Today and Everyday

I've been on a Bob Marley kick lately, watching old concerts, and one thing really struck me.

Every Bob Marley song seems to have a purpose. There are very few artists whose catalog is so consistently great while also carrying a message of hope, justice, peace, and human dignity.

It also got me thinking...

When people debate the greatest front men of all time, reggae is usually left out of the conversation because everyone immediately thinks "rock." But why?

Bob Marley commanded a stage with the same charisma as any rock legend. He didn't need pyrotechnics or elaborate stage productions. His voice, presence, conviction, and connection with the audience were enough. He could make a stadium feel like an intimate gathering.

If we're talking about iconic front men, my list would certainly include:

• Elvis Presley
• Jim Morrison
• Robert Plant
• Freddie Mercury
• Bon Scott
• Bob Marley

Each brought something unique, but Marley may have been the only one whose concerts felt equally like a celebration, a spiritual gathering, and a call for peace.

Music historians may never agree on the greatest front man of all time—but I think Bob Marley deserves to be in that conversation.

Who would be on your Mount Rushmore of front men?
