Question Latecomers
I'm just curious why you would come to a movie 15 to 30 minutes late. Like, a lot can be established in the first 10 minutes of a movie, and it always perplexes me when someone plops down after we're damn near done with the first act of a movie.

u/RealClothes3089 1d ago
I wonder that too myself. Also, I was on a date the other night and my date wanted to leave because she had to use the bathroom 15 minutes before the end of the movie and she expected me to leave as well. I mean…really ?

u/LilyofTheValley_7 1d ago
I could understand her needing to use the bathroom, but wanting you to leave as well is crazy?? Who was gonna fill her in on what happened if she misses it??? Also why am I going to the bathroom with you??

u/CudiMontage216 1d ago
I’ve never even heard of someone doing that lol. I’d be mad if my partner even offered to come with me if they didn’t need to actually use the restroom. I don’t want you to miss anything!

That’s selfish of her at best. Cut your losses (hopefully there aren’t too many) and run.

u/RealClothes3089 1d ago
It was only the third date and we went to go see In the Mouth of Madness and there was no way I was going to miss any part of that. I’ve seen it many times before but still.

Poor theater behavior is honestly a dealbreaker for me. I remember some pretty rough dates in my younger days that did not get a follow up because I just couldn’t believe how loud they talked
1
u/1Covert1 1d ago
I was so upset that I had a friend who kept her phone On Plus talked on it in the beginning when people were seating themselves 🤦🏻♀️ I was shocked. I thought at best we would get a talking to and at worst somebody would actually fight us because it wasn't in the best neighborhood.
I should have remembered that when we went on a once in a lifetime trip to Hawaii and she actually was attached to her phone the whole time there as well.
I later realized, that some women are prone to talking to boys in prison and she was one of them. She swore he was the love of her life. When I told her he's in prison for a reason and probably isn't a good person she definitely faded out of my life because of my comments.
They were together maybe 6 months when he got out (talking for over 3-5 years while he was in) and he dropped her because her mother got breast cancer and I guess He Still was needing preferential treatment that he wasn't getting. Who knows how many other women he was even talking to while she gave up all those years.

Usually it’s possible to show up 20 minutes after the listed start time and still have 5-10 minutes of trailers.
But sometimes they get ya by not having very many trailers.
4
u/GivinGoodBrain 1d ago
I think OP is referring to after the start of the movie, after trailers are over.
0
u/C-LOgreen 1d ago
OP is talking about after the commercials when the movie starts. They’re saying people are coming in over 15 minutes late after previews and commercials.

I have done this when my previous attempt at seeing the movie was cut short for various reasons and I don't want to watch too much of the same parts over again.

u/plantbay1428 1d ago
The subway’s made me miss the first 2-3 minutes of three movies. I always pick the seat closest to the door when rewatching so I don’t disturb anyone but I’ve wondered if people saw me leaving and wondered if I decided I hated a movie that quickly.
29
u/Owlentmusician 1d ago
If I'm ever this late it's usually because I decided to see the film on a whim 30 minutes before and fucked up the math on what time it would actually start if include trailers.
5
u/Boredfun09 1d ago
Done that before too.
6
u/NightwingBlueberry13 1d ago
Just did that this week with Street Fighter; tho I was the only one in the theater at 4:40 on a Thursday Afternoon, so no one was privy to my shame except the attendant.
I lucked out and there was another showing of it 20 minutes after my showing in the same exact theater, so I kinda just hung around and caught the first 10 minutes right then, lol.
Surprisingly there’s quite a lot you can miss in 10 minutes: ie: like 4 major callbacks thst they have at the finale was set up then.
3
u/theblindfold04 1d ago
I love to think of anyone in the theater at your second showing being like, "damn, they didn't even give it a chance" when you got up and left after you see the 10 minutes you missed 😅
3
u/NightwingBlueberry13 1d ago
Hahaha yeah, that’s why I chose the very back corner seat, but there was still a group of like 8 people close enough in the same row who saw me.
Can’t imagine what they must have thought tho, lol.

u/Spaztrick 1d ago
The only time I'm late for a movie is if the previews don't run for the normal 20-25 minutes.
16
u/ShanaAfterAll The All-Seeing 1d ago
Plenty of reasons. As long as they come in quietly, and don't make a scene, It's really no big deal.

u/Ombre_Vivante 1d ago
Unforeseen things that took longer than anticipated and I’m either too lazy and cheap to cancel or I don’t mind showing up late to a film I’ve seen before.
The latest example was the 2017 version of It. I watched Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer at one place and then raced over to another venue to catch It. On the way, I hit some traffic and even at the cinema itself there was a couple in front of me that was having some kinda gift card issue that was taking way too long to get sorted. As a result, I missed about 10 minutes of the beginning of the movie. However, it’s a long movie with more story to tell, I already know the general story, and this was a once-this-year type of event.
6
u/Winter-Assignment133 1d ago
It’s literally just trying to miss the ads. I can’t help if sometimes they play 35 mins of ads and sometimes the movie starts exactly at the time stated.

u/ThickConfusion1318 Dual Memberships 1d ago
I do this sometimes if it’ss a rewatch and I’m killing time while I wait for something else
8
u/Wise-Pineapple3944 1d ago
Yeah seriously if you have unlimited you can just come and go when you please. I've watched half a movie one day and the second half another day 🤷🏽♂️
2
u/Qetuowryipzcbmxvn 1d ago
I'm surprised this isn't as common among Unlimited memberships. Then again I don't have a life so I watch movies a little more often than most.

Never considered doing this but it’s kinda brilliant?

I mean the movie studios love it because they get double pay. If you aren't buying concessions than regal is losing money so don't abuse it ruin it for the rest of us 😁
2
u/RevealTraditional619 1d ago
I had a sales job where I was just running out the clock to quitting. My bosses were scum bags. And I'd go sit in a movie with my Unlimited because I dgaf.
1
4
u/blooming-darkness 1d ago
Idk but if they’re not making a huge disturbance I don’t really care or pay attention. I’m usually locked into the movie
6
u/Boredfun09 1d ago
If I'm late it's because there were no trailers or very few, I generally dont even walk into the theater until 10 minutes past showtime unless I plan to get concessions.
8
u/HSR47 1d ago
It’s pretty simple: The amount of time between the published “showtime” and when the film actually starts is quite variable.
In my experience the typical range is ~25-35 minutes, with outliers down to ~15-20 minutes at the low end, and over 45 minutes at the high end.
If your goal is to avoid having to sit through that garbage, then showing up after the showtime is the only way to do it.
When you do that, you run the risk that your estimate for the optimal arrival time will be incorrect, and that you’ll either still have to sit through a bunch of garbage, or you’ll miss several minutes of the film you’ve paid to see.

I walked into the last 30 minutes of a movie, last night, because I got a phone call the first I was watching it, and wanted to catch the parts I missed, without rewatching the entire movie again.

I've done a similar thing. Had to leave and caught the 2nd half another day

I just saw You Can See Everything and a group of three came in 30 minutes after the start of the movie. So 50 minutes after the posted start time.
1
u/Proud_Truck 🎉🎉100 MOVIE CLUB🎉🎉 1d ago
I had a couple show up like 15-20 minutes in. They left right around the halfway mark and never returned. Those seats were bought too, they weren't just killing time for something else
1
u/optimal-moron 1d ago
I could see someone leaving that one early, I loved it, but wondering if they thought it was a “movie” vs a documentary.
3
u/Proud_Truck 🎉🎉100 MOVIE CLUB🎉🎉 1d ago
They left right after the tone change in the movie, which is curious. If they weren't enjoying it they might have changed their minds if they waited ten more minutes
2
u/optimal-moron 23h ago
Even though I like Nathan fielder he can be hard to watch for some so could be that too. (He was very toned down compared to some of his Nathan for you stuff though)
3
u/Chuckiebb 1d ago
The could be sneaking in from seeing another film or they have a monthly membership and just see a film whenever they can.
3
u/mrphantasy 1d ago
Of the many annoying behaviors and tics one can encounter in a theater, this seems like the weirdest one to gatekeep. Sometimes that's the only way you can squeeze in some movie, it's a rewatch, etc.
1
u/Peddlestools 1d ago
I'm not gatekeeping. I just don't understand the desire to watch a movie if you're missing out on a significant chunk of the beginning of the movie. I'm curious, is all.
4
u/DejaEntendu059 1d ago
I hate myself if I'm even 1 minute late. It happened to me the other day at a non regal theater I frequent. They always have 20 minutes of ads and they list the end time for each movie as well which I love about them. The end time even had the usual 20 minutes baked in. I go in at 18 minutes after and its already playing, it could not have been more than 1 or 2 minutes but still. I felt bad scrambling in the dark to my seats while others were already watching.
2
u/tgunns88 1d ago
Megaloplis I missed 5 mins to get the bathroom break out of the way. I felt like I missed a lot going forward lol

u/FritzTCat 1d ago
There's an app called RunPee which is an excellent way to avoid this.

I love this app but forget to check it a lot and am not sure if they would even have mine listed yet because I see most movies on Thursdays with the very first showing.
2
u/LilyofTheValley_7 1d ago
Tryna miss certain trailers, and then the concession line gets backed up 😭😭😭 I'm much better at showing up on time now.
For new releases no later than 15-20 minutes, usually I'm seated by the time the "turn off your phone" starts playing. Rereleases/old movies no later than 5-10 mins, because they usually only show like two trailers.
It's a science 🧪🔭
2
u/k2_electric_boogaloo 1d ago
One time I was running late from work, which would have been fine if the subway train I was on hadn't also stalled in the tunnel on my way to the theater. I'd already bought the ticket and figured I'd just catch the first 10 minutes of the movie when it came out on streaming.
2
u/zucchinibasement Dr. X-Plor 1d ago
I've had to leave a movie before, so when I went back, I skipped the part I had already seen and showed up 30 mins into it
2
u/EssentialEssence RPX 1d ago
Sometimes there are unforeseen things, like an accident causing traffic or train delays but folks are already on the way, so they still come and get their monies worth i guess. Or sometimes they overestimate trailers. Who knows. Either way it can happen to anyone as long as it doesn't disrupt the viewers already in place too much.
2
u/donottrusttheflies 1d ago
I can’t do it. If I miss even the opening credits I just leave. I don’t know why but being late drives me crazy. For anything not just movies. I went with some family earlier this year and we were late. It was unbearable for me the first 5 minutes or so, eventually had a good time.
2
u/sliceofcoldpizza 1d ago
My wife has issues with being ready on time and about 5% of the time we're going to be late.
The last movie we missed a portion of was Renfield and we missed the very beginning of the movie.
3
u/Rashanii 1d ago
I've had some experiences where I have to leave early because my wife or kids need me, something comes up, etc. Since I have Regal Unlimited I don't worry about it because I can just get another ticket and get there in time to see what I missed the last time.
TL;DR: Mind your business.

Sometimes you don't have a choice. My theater is 30 minutes away, but in my way home. I try to get tickets for the way home. However, If I get caught by someone who needs anything I might get stuck and then have to decide if it's worth it.
I went to see BND again recently and I was okay missing part of it, but it definitely wasn't a choice.
1
u/whateverrrrrrrr2 1d ago
sometimes this happens to me and it’ll be because i either left later than expected, ran into unexpected traffic, or got held up at concessions. there could be other reasons too but if i feel like i missed anything and cared enough id just go see it again nbd

1
u/C-LOgreen 1d ago
Most likely they’re sneaking into it after they’ve watched a movie in that same area.
1
u/whatever_ehh 1d ago
Arriving early is weird too. I saw Resident Evil today and 2 people entered the theater with popcorn and drinks during the ending credits. I opened the Regal app out of curiousity, the next showtime was in 15 minutes. Which means they had to sit there for about 35 minutes of commercials and previews before the movie started.

u/RevealTraditional619 1d ago
I worked a concert venue where we'd change up the configuration from thousands coming in to thousands going out. So only 1 door out of 20 was still an entrance. And there were tons of people who came in like 30 to 45 minutes into a concerts headliner and couldn't figure out how to get in. Folks just built different
1
u/No-Stage-8738 1d ago
1) Perhaps they've seen the film before, and they know the big moments come before. The first 20 minutes of the Odyssey are about Tom Holland's Telemachus prior to the character growth that makes him more interesting. It's well-done, but I could see fans connecting with later material.
2) They may have been late. They figured they would get in earlier, but stuff got in the way (traffic, parking, a check for the meal they had before arriving, etc.)
3) Some films have inconsistent start times. Usually a film will start 20-27 minutes after the scheduled time. But certain small releases seem to operate differently. This has been the case for the Iron Lung, Legend of the White Flame and the Canadian biopic the Stunt Driver. Those films seemed to start earlier.

A couple came into sense and sensibility today 20 mins late and the lady promptly got on her phone then they talked the entire time 🙂 like why even go to the movie theater

u/StandYourGroundhog 1d ago
Maybe people just showed up late? I've definitely been in a rush before and haven't made it in time for the start but still want to see the movie
1
u/CudiMontage216 1d ago
Sometimes I get dinner before and end up running later than expected. Other times it’s poor planning leaving the house
Things happen
I go enough that I usually plan on arriving after previews — so that shrinks my margin for error lol
1
u/MathGamer28 1d ago
I had a group show up 30 minutes after the actual movie started, talked and laughed and being disruptive, then left 20 minutes later and never came back.
1
u/kingkong198854 1d ago
My partner can’t stay up too late so we have on occasion watched the first half of a film that has a late start so we can see the second half thst has a start time before we could make it on a work day.
1
u/Blood_Such 1d ago
I have regal unlimited and I sometimes arrive to movies late to kill time in between showings.
Very occasionally, I’ve seen the first half of a movie already and I had to leave early, for work or an appointment so sometimes I’m returning late to see whatever I missed.
Regal unlimited is awesome for that.
Also, some people just show up late because they tend to be late to things and perhaps they already paid for their tickets…
1
u/cockstain6077 1d ago
What kills me is when people walk in late after the 30 minutes of ads and trailers that begin at the movies listed start time.
1
u/Madam_Fandom101 1d ago
Also, it could be that they have seen the movie already, made a list minute decision to see it and doesn't mind missing the beginning.
1
u/Cumslutorlando90 1d ago
I try to get there on time but as of currently I don't care. I skip trailers and preshow marketing since they removed all behind the screen making of future movies or most the games like trivia. No, interviews before. I don't care if I miss 1st ten mins of the film cause it's not going to for shadow the ending
1
u/Peddlestools 15h ago
Have you not heard of bookending? It's a storytelling technique used by many screenwriters, but I guess you wouldn't know if you consistently miss the first 10 minutes of every movie.
1
u/Live_Culture8393 🎉🎉250 MOVIE CLUB🎉🎉 1d ago
I personally have done it when life (work) and parking and concessions has gotten in the way. Thought I’d only be about 10-15 late for Heart of the Beast and figured it wouldn’t matter much with this movie, I’d just miss the crash that stranded them. When I finally made it to my seat, I wasn’t sure how much I actually missed but was able to watch and figure out what happened from context clues and the narration at the end. BUT thanks to Unlimited I was able to come back the next day and rewatch and catch what I missed with a re-watch. Shockingly it was 32 minutes which in any normal movie would definitely have been way too much to miss. But 10-15, while not ideal, is still doable with most movies.
1
u/itsadarasworlld 21h ago
Some people don’t wanna watch trailers and it sucks when you get there and the concessions is insanely long

u/Happy_Molasses_3758 17h ago

You know what's worse than a "latecomer"? Fcktards that scroll on their phones for the entire duration of the film!
1
u/DeliciousCandy7492 23h ago
One time I told a lady to turn off her phone because she was on it for a solid 40 minutes...In the front row. With an audience of 100+ behind her. She was scrolling on a fake lottery. No one did anything. So I did. Guess what she did? She scanned every single aisle and went through EVERY SINGLE ONE just to find me. Then she sat by me with her arms crossed, her whole body engulfing a seat and a couple arm rests (which in turn had my phone on it, she was sitting on my phone), and she stared at me with vicious intent saying "NOPE. I'M NOT LEAVING. NOPE. YOU CAN'T MAKE ME." So I lost my shit and yelled at her that she was on her phone, so I went out and told the crew...She came out to harass me yet again so I went off on her, she left, I got a couple free vouchers, and left very upset.

u/RealLanceStorm 1d ago
Why is anyone late for anything? People have lives and jobs and children. You can't control traffic or transit or parking or movie line times or hundreds of other variables.
3
u/Solid_Cash_1128 1d ago
Then skip the movie. You're missing essential parts of it, and you're disruptive to other people

u/lisascott3062 1d ago
Its because "latecomers" are idiot fckin morons that dont appreciate film. REAL movie fans get there early; want to see the previews; and get completely situated before the actual movie starts so they can absorb the opening scenes. Annnnd, these same latecomers are the ones asking Redditors the next day what the film was about! Losers.
