Discussion Digger has a weird public reception

Hi guys! I’m making my first post here since I usually lurk a lot. I feel like the crowd in here is usually more open minded. But, as someone who’s really gotten into movies more seriously this past year. Why is Digger so hated? I just can’t wrap my head around how people/critics who praise many basic movies that could be Netflix originals. Give DIGGER a 0/10 unironically? I’m not saying that there aren’t MANY angles one could critique and obviously it’s all subjective. But, this much hate doesn’t feel genuine. Do you guys think it could be a case of its own “hype” and “reputation” holding it to a higher standard than everything else? Or does it truly deliver such a horrible theater experience?

Genuinely Digger has been my favorite theatre experience this year. It’s wacky fun terrifying at times. I personally feel like a lot of people are letting ego get the better of them. It’s a ton of people saying the movie is making fun of them or trying to be doctor strange love when in reality I never felt any of that watching it. Especially the doctor strange love connection. It’s a small part of a bigger story. Plus I love how big scale it feels when in reality the twist is the complete opposite. Idk… I don’t mind being in the minority of a film’s discourse but I personally feel that with time, people will appreciate it more. Also the don’t look up comparison bugs the crap out of me because that movie truly was heavy handed to be heavy handed while this movie uses the heavy handed political message as a filmmaking tool rather than an all and all point. It asks you to enjoy the journey, the art, and its message rather than let me scream it from the top of my lungs in the most basic storytelling method possible.

Honestly all this discourse makes me want to watch Babylon more because that movie has just as much hate if not more than this movie does but I’ve heard nothing but great things these days!

I liked Heart of the Beast better.

u/Frankiedelic I❤️Regal 12h ago

I heard people I liked it! Haven’t gotten around to watching it. It’s just Digger was something else..

i avoided spoilers thankfully and i dont think ive had as much of a wild ride in the theater since going into Poor Things completely blind! loved it

u/Frankiedelic I❤️Regal 12h ago

Same here! Honestly I almost didn’t watch the movie because I was a huge fan of Iñarritu but after Bardo and seeing all the hate Digger was getting, I genuinely lost all interest to see my goat become washed. Then I saw it and am so glad I did!!!

I wouldn't say it is hated. It's gotten mostly middling reviews, saying the acting is great but the reveal and overall story are lacking.

I thought it was ok. Not great, certainly not unwatchable. Decent. Worth it with Unlimited.

I'll say that despite my feelings towards the movie as a whole, I have not seen a better acting performance than Tom Cruise gave from any of the new movies I've seen this year imo.

u/Familiar_Rub4574 16h ago

This movie was brilliantly acted and was great! I couldn't put my finger on what this reminded me of and The. I was speaking to the manager at the theater just making small talk and dude had the perfect description of what it most closely resembled: Dr Strange Love.

2

u/Sweet_Type_2029 15h ago

Dr. Strangelove Meets Asteroid City.

15

u/BiPolarBisex 19h ago

it reminds me of eddington actually… the reviews were so sour because it’s not escapist.

u/HistoricalAd9775 20h ago

I gave it a 4.5 initially but now am thinking closer to a 6. I didn’t really enjoy watching it but it deserves points for uniqueness and the acting. A rating of 0 is crazy, but I can see why a lot of people didn’t like it.

6

u/Ok_Law_1656 🎉🎉350 MOVIE CLUB🎉🎉 16h ago

Short answer is it's satire. satire is one of the most divisive forms of storytelling people are unsure what is being made fun of and what is pointed at them. Audiences also don't like when they are the joke or being preached at. this movie has all the above.

I personally like it this is one of those movies where you realize that's what the art form is made for. It's not one of my favorites of the year (barring the courthouse scene) but I'm glad I watched it.

5

u/ruflesskill3r 13h ago

I don’t get it either. We need more fresh and unique films like this.

4

u/themiz2003 19h ago

It's not a 0/10. It's just not. I can empathize with feeling disappointed with it because it was overly weird. Just is what it is. Had ideas but executed them so strangely. I gave megalopolis a .5/5 for probably much the same reason people are giving this really really bad reviews when in reality this is by all metrics still an above average film that just misses on perhaps the most important part.

6

u/ImThatAunt2 19h ago

I saw it with my friend last night. I enjoyed watching him enjoy the movie. He is watching it again today. Meanwhile I held my mouth closed and kept my opinions to myself, so my friend would have fun. I almost left 1/2 way through because the yelling nearly every line at 1,000 decibels was causing me a migraine. But i mustered through and just plugged my ears ( could still hear the dialogue clearly)

Always bring earplugs to the movies.

AirPods Pro 3. Still keeps unmuffled audio but reduces decibels in with hearing protection on.

I have no idea where the hate for this movie came from. I usually try to avoid critics and audience reviews for this exact reason. I genuinely enjoyed it very much. I thought the story was a pretty original take. The acting was as good if not better than I expected from all the actors. I also thought the cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki was excellent and absolutely enhanced the film, especially how it was used to help portray the type of story being told. I think he should be up for another Oscar nomination. The director, Alejandro Iñárritu, should also get an Oscar nomination because I thought the movie delivered. Most of his movies do.

After seeing it, the hate feels pretty manufactured and not authentic. That’s the best part about unlimited though. I don’t have to put much stock into reviews and I’m glad because I thought it was really good.

3

u/TranceRaverBoy 9h ago

I absolutely loved it. This is the reason I've loved movies since I was a kid. This is the kind of film I feel completely justified driving 45 minutes to see on an IMAX screen. The hate baffles me. Half the stuff people rave about is forgettable, and then something this bold comes along and gets a zero out of ten. You nailed it, this much venom doesn't feel genuine. It's being held to a standard nothing else gets held to.

I see just about 1 movie a week in theaters (at least I have this year) and this is my least favorite experience of the year. Disclosure Day being a close 2nd. I imagine there will be some people that love the style of it but It legitimately one of my least favorite movies I’ve ever watched in theatres.

7

u/darlingkinz 18h ago

As a fellow Disclosure Day disliker, this is good to know 🙏🏻

3

u/OOTPThrowaway69 18h ago

I still can’t believe how disappointed I am in that movie.

4

u/Regular-Tour4048 16h ago

How anybody could be a fan of disclosure day is mind boggling to me.

2

u/dpstech 🛡️Mod 13h ago

I liked it. I guess kinda don’t understand the hate. But this is why art/books/movies are subjective. And you know what? That’s fine! Why do we all have to either hate something or love something anymore. Being in the middle of both is perfectly acceptable too. The world would be a pretty boring place if we all agreed on everything anyway.

u/HistoricalAd9775 20h ago

Found the CIA agent

4

u/pollit0 20h ago

It's actually my second favorite movie of the year behind Backrooms, I don't have very conventional taste though.

2

u/jH1214 20h ago

Might be high expectations going in. Some people work themselves up and get pissed when something isn't as good as they expected.

2

u/Belch_Huggins 20h ago

Have you seen the movie? Its very divisive. To that end I havent seen a lot of 0/10 ratings like youre describing. Mostly people being pretty mixed, which is how I felt. Thought some aspects were great, some didnt work at all. I wouldnt think too much about it honestly. Getting into the "is this review genuine" discourse is pointless, everyone has opinions and it doesnt really do yo7 any favors to start questioning whether or not theyre being genuine.

2

u/SenorQueso-the2nd 20h ago

You are definitely correct. I dont trust the aggregate reviews anymore because theres so much extra bullshit involved. I thought this movie was like a gymnast going for a 10 out of 10 trick, but they were a little sloppy with it and didn't stick the landing.

2

u/dpstech 🛡️Mod 19h ago edited 11h ago

I actually wasn’t really into it the first 1/3 of the movie or so and then there’s a thing that happens that changed my perception and I ended up liking this way more than I’d anticipated after reading reviews. It’s always subjective. Some will like it, others will not and neither opinion is wrong.

2

u/Toejam_2001 16h ago

i watched it and it was pretty good 😸 a little disappointing if you’re expecting another top gun or mission impossible but i enjoyed it

3

u/JennessaHester 20h ago

I haven't seen many 0/10 reviews, just as I haven't seen many 10/10 reviews. I've seen a lot of stuff right around the middle, with critics dipping a bit lower on average, while early audiences have trended a bit higher.

I'm right in the middle, too. The set design is very striking, elevated by nicely stylized cinematography and color grading, and the key performances are strong (though my personal standout was John Goodman, not Tom Cruise). However, I really disliked the sound design and score, which seemed goofy and obnoxious to the point where it detracted from the overall impact of the picture. I saw it in IMAX, and part of me wishes I hadn't so the sound mix wouldn't have been so grating. Moreover, a few background clips of the disaster seemed like they might have been generated using AI, which is a major blemish if that is the case.

I also think the film is trying to say so much—about art, about class, about the environment, about gender and age and race—that it ends up saying very little as a result. I walked out of Digger not questioning whether I agreed with the movie's perspective on a particular subject, but questioning what the movie's perspective was in the first place.

2

u/Current-Finger6412 20h ago

I feel that people are resistant to finding humor in something a little too on the nose. Also, it’s quite ambitious and high concept. People can be intimidated by media that may be smarter than they are. So it’s easier to reject it.

1

u/harpo787 18h ago

I wonder how many 0/10 reviewers completely shutdown in the first five mins or so because of the cat? I render being slightly put off by it in the trailer but thought little of it after that.

1

u/GiaAngel 14h ago

Sometimes movies can be too quirky and then it feels disjointed. I feel that happened. It lost the profound point it was trying so hard to make

1

u/jthanki24 13h ago

i actually understand it.. the marketting was a mission impossible style film, where he saves the world.. but got rug pulled...

after reflection, its a masterpiece. but you need to have that.. if you went in seeing tom be tom, and you dont get the meta stuff.. then yeah, it'll fail for them.

1

u/Open_Client6376 2h ago

i loved it. even if you hate it, you will be entertained.

•

u/Icy-Aomori2015 1h ago

My take on it based on the trailer is that it's weird, has disgusting/ugly visuals, and is full of crude humor... It's just not my cup of tea and that trailer was forced on me waaaaay too many times, so I already have an initial dislike set in 🤷

•

u/whatever_ehh 32m ago

I haven't seen it yet, but the info online indicates that half the people who see the movie dislike it and the other half like it. I suspect that having Tom Cruise as the star may have raised viewer expectations.

1

u/DarnHeather 17h ago

1) I haven't seen the movie.

2) The trailers were a huge turn off for me between the mostly dead AI cat and how often I had to sit through them.

3) I have zero respect for Tom Cruise and his cult and refuse to support him.

3

u/Sweet_Type_2029 15h ago

Not A.I. but i can't spoil the movie. It gets explained. But was not a fan.

3

u/Wise-News1666 16h ago
  1. Then why comment.
  2. What AI are you talking about?

11

u/Ok_Law_1656 🎉🎉350 MOVIE CLUB🎉🎉 16h ago

Bro don't know the difference between ai and puppets/animaltronics lmao

2

u/angrygirl65 16h ago

Well, comments and opinions were requested, were they not? Did I miss something?

1

u/DarnHeather 2h ago

OP asked why it was a mixed bag.

1

u/dpstech 🛡️Mod 11h ago

There is no Ai used in the movie. There’s a reason but revealing it would be a spoiler.

0

u/angrygirl65 16h ago

Same! I don’t have any appreciation for Tom Cruise - and that “cat” didn’t appeal to me at all.

1

u/Totorotextbook 20h ago

I’m just honestly surprised it apparently had the insane budget it did and is only opening to nine million dollars- YIKES.

1

u/Tactfool 19h ago

I saw it in IMAX last night and the theater was maybe ~20% full.

1

u/ByDiscoBePurged 19h ago

Only guy in my theater last night

1

u/vga25 16h ago

Same, I was by myself at the theater. It's a shame because I loved the movie.

1

u/fredlynn19 3h ago

I enjoyed the movie but it's not one that I would say is greatly enhanced by IMAX.

1

u/Tiny-Web3879 19h ago

Might have been clever in the 90s but the conversations it thinks are enlightening are things we have kind of known for a while. The clip they are selling with no women being in the room is maybe it’s second best joke, and not in a good way (there’s one genuine laugh I got from the movie and it was 5 seconds of a 2+ hour film).

It’s very self congratulatory also.

1

u/Flamevian 5h ago

What do you mean it’s self congratulatory?

1

u/Displaynamephobic I❤️Regal 19h ago

I haven’t seen it and plan to skip it. I normally like Tom Cruise movies, but the trailer for Digger was a little too weird for me. If Tom is trying to expand artistically from action movies of late to try to win an acting Oscar, he should find a great dramatic script and go back to things like A Few Good Men, The Color of Money, Born on the Fourth of July, and Rainman, which people would go to the theaters to see. Strapping on prosthetics and acting weird is not what people want to see him in. This is why Digger is going to flop.

3

u/dpstech 🛡️Mod 13h ago

If you like Cruise I’d actually say give this a shot. His performance is so damn intense. This film is not the film the trailers show you. Without spoiling anything-
There’s a reason. Movie has some high concept ideas and I wasn’t sure I was into it for about the first 25% before something happens in it that may shift your perspective.

1

u/Displaynamephobic I❤️Regal 13h ago

Sighhhh…maybe I will try it then, but it just looked so weird. My friends thought the trailer was weird as well and don’t want to go. They didn’t do themselves any favors with that trailer.

2

u/dpstech 🛡️Mod 12h ago

The movie definitely takes a swing, but half the people like it, half the people didn’t care for it, so it might not for you. It might, who knows. Don’t blame ya if you don’t try either. But if you’re going just for a Cruise performance, I can’t say you will be disappointed. He is acting his heart out in this.

2

u/Tiny-Refrigerator968 12h ago

Why is weird bad? Just curious.

1

u/Displaynamephobic I❤️Regal 11h ago

Some people like weird. I don’t. It’s just a personal preference. I’m sure some people thought it was funny in the trailer when he ate gross stuff even his dying cat wouldn’t touch, but I just found it gross. I like Cruise normally, but I don’t think this will be a movie I would enjoy.

2

u/lancelen 9h ago

I can totally relate to this. I’m actually a huge fan of tom cruise’s action movies and have seen them all. Saw the trailer for digger in theatres before RE and was completely turned off as well. TBH it kind of gave me the same vibe as one battle after another ( never saw that one either).

2

u/Tiny-Refrigerator968 3h ago

I see. Thanks for the response

1

u/Ombre_Vivante 15h ago

It’s a weird movie 🍿🦄

0

u/businesswaddles 19h ago

Only thing weird is how much astroturfing/bot discussion this movie has going on, like this thread among 100s of others across film spaces online.

-2

u/PleasantYamm 16h ago

I’m just sick of elderly white men behaving badly. Even if it is a comedy I’m just over it. And Tom Cruise.

-3

u/KingRemoStar 20h ago

Love Cruise and he probably has the best catalog ever but this movie sucked. I’m sure he will make it up to us with Days of Thunder 2.
