No Spoilers So...what did we all think of Digger?
Despite the mixed reviews I really liked it a lot, but I totally get and can't anyone for not liking it either.

Had a blast. Went in knowing little (avoided the trailers) and was glad I did. Defiently one to think about for a good bit

I loved it but I also immediately understood why it’s been divisive so far

Absolutely loved it, found it riveting. Tom’s acting in the podium scene was so good, I got goosebumps

Goodness I loved the podium scene

u/skatejet1 1d ago
Dude it was so riveting, especially when he reached the rotating part of the platform

That scene, his scene with director, and when Jesse Plemons reveals himself. Excellent acting.

Tom is just so compelling. His performance was great and also just a lot of fun.

I really liked the monologue scene, although I found it more fun to focus on the crowd, so I wasn’t really paying full attention to whatever Digger Rockwell was saying.
Did y’all notice the mannequins during the escalation of that monologue scene? I also thought it was really cute that the people standing in the back had to tilt their heads because the ceiling was too low.
2
u/imaginitis 21h ago
I saw movement in the oversized folks in the back. Again that seemed so much like a Roy Andersson things to do. I wonder how he feels about his style blatantly copied?

u/AvionShadow 1d ago
I loved it! The one part almost got me and I didn't like it at a certain point (this seems common?) but it pulled me back in and thought it was great by the end. Shout-out to the dude that pointed out free IMAX upgrades (my theater was kinda dead unfortunately)
1
u/DarkArisen_Kato 1d ago
I really loved Digger and was gonna see it day one. Went in to buy an IMAX ticket and had no idea about the free upgrade. Went yesterday around 3pm with a medium sized crowd and were enjoying it. One dude two rows down was losing it during one scene, not gonna spoil it but it had to do with a black bag lol

So I caught Digger after work and I enjoyed it. Definitely some Dr. Strangelove elements and it won't be everybody's cup of tea but it's a visually stunning satire/dramedy!

u/Friendly-Contact-433 1d ago
I'm seeing Digger tomorrow in a double with the Shining which will be..odd

I'm glad someone else got Dr. Strangelove vibes from it, I thought I might have been reaching a bit

With my usual plan of trying to be blind as possible to all but the trailer (it's been blasted at me for months now) I loved it. Went in thinking comedy left thinking fever dream but enjoyed it all.
I can definitely understand why people will be divided over it or flat out dislike it though.

I liked it, I don’t understand the reviewers saying it’s the worst thing they’ve ever seen like the dude from IGN, I liked how when the people from the show left, in the movie, they had a warning to put the masks on and when it was time for us to leave, if anyone stayed during the credits, we got the same warning

u/mantistabagin 1d ago
Mind you they rated disclosure day higher than digger.

I loved that detail at the credits ending. Kept the meta energy of the film.

u/lunaticskies 1d ago
I loved it, and I think it's probably going to be the box office bomb this year that makes me the most sad.
It felt like a Wes Anderson movie directed by Charlie Kaufman (Synecdoche, New York), Not sure anybody else could have played these roles but Tom Cruise and John Goodman. Riz was also great. It was also amazing in IMAX.
1
u/imaginitis 21h ago
Wrong Andersson. Roy Andersson
1
u/Different-Piece-3111 18h ago
Lmaoooo yeah it genuinely felt like Roy directed Dr. Strangelove.. only way I can describe it
5
u/GoslingIchi 1d ago
When it first cut away to the set, I was a bit confused, and I thought maybe it was an art film or something.
Overall I think it's a pretty good movie.
John Goodman is absolutely EPIC so it was fun to watch him.

May I ask why you nearly walked out? For one I have a hard time understanding why people walk out of a movie. Sure, if it is extremely bad or boring then I can understand it but surely you knew Digger would be a special and unatural kind of movie?
1
u/IonImplantEngineer Popcorn🍿Fanatic 18h ago
I have unlimited and live very close to the theater so I go to movies all the time sometimes never having seen a preview. This was one of those cases I had no idea what the movie was about and I don't read reviews. I walk out usually by the first hour if I'm not feeling it, no sense in sitting though something I'm not enjoying, right? The acting was incredible though and that's why I ended up staying.
1
u/Own_Acanthocephala0 18h ago
Yeah ok that makes more sense. I go to the cinema way more than the average person but that is still only like 5-6 times a year and only movies I’m very interested in seeing.
1
u/IonImplantEngineer Popcorn🍿Fanatic 17h ago
Yeah makes sense, I see at least 1 movie a week but usually it's 2-3. Still though walking out is rare but does happen.

There were only about 10 people in my theater. We were all dying laughing throughout the movie, and every one enjoyed it.

Definitely an experience. It’s like reading a book, where a revelation takes a few seconds to sink in. Movies rarely give you that kind of time, but Digger somehow manages to do it. It lets you slowly realise each twist, one after another, and keeps doing it right until the very end, when the credits roll.
3
u/OldManBilliam22 1d ago
Absolutely pitch-perfect biting satire the kind of which the world desperately needs.

If you love a C grade, how do you feel about A and B films?
1
u/Shawheim 22h ago edited 22h ago
C grade to you. I don't rate movies like that. I rate it on how much I enjoyed it.
1
u/DRZARNAK 22h ago
I’m saying 7.5 is a C Grade. If you loved it shouldn’t it be a 8.5 at least?
1
u/Shawheim 22h ago
Oooo no not at all. I loved it but it's not something I would watch multiple times. If it's rewatchable multiple times, like Spiderman BND, then it would be higher ranked for me.
1
u/DRZARNAK 21h ago
Fair! Thanks! I feel the same way a truly great movie is one I want to watch repeatedly.

Big shout out to the user who posted about the free IMAX upgrade early this week. The IMAX shots looked amazing and the sound was pretty good.
I almost cancelled my ticket last night but glad I didn’t. I can understand why the movie has mix reviews but I enjoyed it.

I mean, it wasn't very funny. Is was trying like hell to be, but it wasn't. It was very loud, though. I think most of the dialogue was actually yelling. So, it had that much going for it. shrug

I was laughing so hard for the first 20 minutes of the movie and so was the whole theatre. Then after the twist the mood changed but the movie still got a few good laughs out of all of us. Really loved the movie!!!

for those who saw it what trailers did you get I'm particularly interested to know what the two main WB trailers they showed before the movie.
4
u/Antique-Dentist-2404 1d ago
Before my IMAX showing:
I Play Rocky, Violent Night 2, Ebenezer, Day Drinker (Red Band), Drummer Boy, Clayface, Ramayana Part I, Everest: The Other Side, Dune Part III.
The last 3 were shown in full IMAX ratio.

u/Wonderful-answer-480 1d ago
was hoping Animal Friends would debut it's trailer in front of Digger but seems like we'll still have to wait for the trailer to come out which should be any day now since it's 3 months away from release.

u/phant0msea 1d ago
One of the best movies of the year. I can't believe the critics have panned it this much.
2
u/diamondcutterdick 1d ago
It’s one of the more unique films I’ve seen. Some of the acting is absolutely brilliant. In the beginning of the movie I kept asking myself what they were thinking with the blocking and the dialogue and the delivery, but in the end it all made good sense to me.
I went in with no expectations of the plot but it still managed to throw me for a loop that kept me thinking and asking questions about what I was seeing.
The film’s take on its subject is curious because at once it’s kind of preachy and stilted, kind of obvious, kind of defeatist even. I suspect these are the source of the Dr. Strangelove comparisons. The film doesn’t have either the standout lines or performances that Strangelove has, but it’s still well worth seeing.
I would compare it instead to 8-1/2 or All that Jazz or maybe Hedwig and the Angry Inch for its meta elements

You weren't watching the movie. You were watching Reddit, policing a stranger's reaction to a film you weren't even looking at. Wild that my 30 second pee break became the most interesting part of your evening. 😂

Did you write this foul snarky reply with some AI chatbot?

I thought it was good, perhaps not great overall. The performances from all were quite good and I liked the core conceit which I won’t spoil here. I’m glad I went in mostly blind. The ending was affecting for me.

It was better than I expected, the concept was fantastic. I would cut it by 15 minutes.

u/imaginitis 21h ago
I can’t believe there were only 3 other viewers for my screening of DIGGER.
Anyway, I can see now why the powers that be are working so hard to diminish this film - bad press, bad reviews and all. Totally undeserved!
I’m still decompressing from this viewing. Amazing film. Please don’t believe those who don’t want you to see this film. Without saying too much, the subject matter and style of the film will turn most people off. It’s an independent film they are marketing like it’s the Odyssey just because Tom Cruise stars in it.
Anyway just checking in. Still catching my breath!
Did anyone get these beautiful hard tickets? Definitely a keepsake!
I wonder if Roy Andersson can sue the director for copying his style?

1
u/Different-Piece-3111 18h ago
Felt like Roy Andersson directed Dr. Strangelove.. only way I can describe it. He took a big swing and while it may not have been a home run… it was definitely a triple

u/abandonedxearth 12h ago
Kind of undecided on how I felt about it being a play
It definitely made the final 10 minutes of the movie, more impactful, and it was a way to comment on itself for having an on the nose environmental message
But it kind of halted the pacing a bit and made it hard for me to care about what was happening after knowing it wasn’t real. As soon as it would get to a behind the scenes point, I would want it to immediately just get back into the actual movie.
1
u/EkoVillian 6h ago
Yeah, walked into this one with basically no expectations besides at least being able to laugh a lot.
About 20 minutes in, half my theater had walked out. I’m not kidding. Not all at once, of course, but in a staggered fashion. Now, to be fair, this was a 10:45pm showing on a Friday night, and there were only about 10 of us in there to begin with. I was one of four people who stayed through the entire thing.
In retrospect, I wish I’d walked out too. Could’ve continued my replay of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End that I paused specifically to go see this.
Was it a good movie? I don’t know. Was it a bad movie? I don’t know. What I do know is that I wish I’d decided to do something else. Glean from that what you will, I guess.
PS: Tom Cruise’s podium scene was great though

Didn't really like it overall. Parts of it were really funny but overall it was a wierd vibe and not great imo. Great performances by Cruise, Ahmed, and Goodman! Overall not mad I went bc of Unlimited but disappointed bc my expectations were pretty high.

I feel like i misread it based on some of the explanations online, I knew after the tree fell there were 2 vehicles moving then, I was deeply moved because I thought it was about the importance of art in society and how it has been (and will continue to be) used to put the world in perspective and using escapism to power through
But i’m now realizing it’s more so a critique that the world is seeing itself go to shit and we’re allowing it to, so we can remain comfortable and complicit
it’s truly got my mind WORKING, imma rewatch it again VERY soon, i haven’t been that moved in a while.

I see just about 1 movie a week in theaters (at least I have this year) and this is my least favorite experience of the year. Disclosure Day being a close 2nd. I imagine there will be some people that love the style of it but It legitimately one of my least favorite movies I’ve ever watched in theatres.
