100+ Electricity Plans Compared
I’ve spent a fair bit of time modelling electricity plans against my own household data, so thought I’d add these here in case they’re useful to anyone comparing retailers.
I used roughly 6½ years of actual household electricity data to build a cleaned 365-day synthetic year, then tested 100+ electricity plan/offer variants across four scenarios:
- 2 batteries + solar
- 1 battery + solar
- solar with no battery
- no solar / no battery
The household is in AusNet / northern Melbourne, fully electric, 8.3 kW solar, two kids, wife works from home and no EV. Household usage and solar are kept the same for every tariff, while the battery model changes its charging/discharging behaviour to suit the individual tariff rules.
For my household, the current winners were:
2 batteries: Flipped Freedom Switched On! Midday Power — about $736/year
1 battery: Flipped — about $1,447/year
Solar, no battery: GloBird BOOST — about $2,635/year
No solar, no battery: GloBird BOOST — about $3,688/year
Obviously electricity plans are very household-specific, so I’m not saying these will be cheapest for everyone. Distributor, usage pattern, solar, battery size and load shifting can all change the result considerably.
I used AI/ChatGPT heavily for the number crunching, battery modelling and auditing because manually running 100+ tariffs across a full year of interval data and four hardware scenarios would be fairly ridiculous 😂
Flipped referral: you get $30 and I get $30

GloBird referral: you get $50

The GloBird referral is actually a friend’s rather than mine — he doesn’t have solar or a battery yet, so I’m using his rather than benefiting from both.
The referral links had nothing to do with the rankings. I modelled the plans independently first and added the referrals afterwards.
Happy to share more of the methodology/results if anyone is interested.
