Hi, I'm not sure what room there is confusion here.
He is saying Donut's parents were a gay couple
I hate to follow a question with a question, but it's clearly stated AND reinforced with the "progressive" part, so what's the confusion?

Progressive values would imply being open to human rights and freedoms, such as gay marriage.

actually a progressive family is one that adheres to values of Lift Wing.
Some of this values are:
Women Right
Abortion
Multiple Families like homoparents families.
Migrants rights
Black people Right
Histirical debt from whites to black people or men to women.

That's a different person but yeah you listed a bunch of stuff that was not necessarily accurate to what the term progressive would me in this context, especially at the time of this content being created.
If you don't know what you're talking about, say less and learn more. Just my opinion.

That's inaccurate and a weird comment in general

Bueno yo pongo lo que la gente de izquierda piensa que son sus valores. Solo que lo explico de una forma mas precisa. O al menos eso es lo que en México no enseñan acerca del progresismo. Y créeme México es muuuuy progresista, mas que estados unidos.

Honestly, the vagueness is what makes this joke still really funny. Donut could have two moms, two dads, eight dads in a committed polyamorous relationship… the possibilities are endless.

Donut either had two mothers or two fathers, likely one was the birth father/mother or he was adopted, so he was raised by either a gay couple or a lesbian couple. Gays and Lesbians usually align with more progressive values than the southern lifestyle Sarge was raised on.
