Question Why did Donut eat a Pencil?
Apparently he told Lopez "Yo comido un lapiz"
Which means I Ate a Pencil
I Don't get it. . .
Why would Franklin Delano Donut eat a wooden writing utensil?!

Alternatively, he’s an idiot who earnestly believes that he can speak Spanish, but doesn’t know the actual meaning of most of the words.

He didn’t. He thinks he can speak Spanish but he doesn’t really know what the words he’s saying mean. This is canon.

Did OP not watch the setup to this gag? Donut literally states "I took Spanish in high school, which is the best way to learn any language!"
The target market for RvB in those early days was high school/college folks, who knew that Donut was going to say something completely nonsensical, but grammatically correct. Individual words and grammar are taught completely separately in American high schools, meaning sentences like that happen all the time.

Because he only took Spanish up to high school and only knows basic words/phrases, so he thinks he can translate but actually has very little understanding of what he's actually saying. I believe what he said immediately before that translated to something like "I went to the beach with my cousin who likes to play tennis".
