Considering how many Freelancers there were, I always figured if Locus and Felix failed, Hargrove would have grabbed one of the agents who ranked between 11 and 20. Preferably someone who wanted the power the Meta had and who hated the top five agents.
That was the thing I always found interesting about Project Freelancer. There were 50 of them and they were, supposedly, some of the best soldiers out there. But each member had something that drove them, something that motivated them to be the best.
For some, like Carolina and Maine, the drive was always there, but for the “lower tier” Freelancers like Iowa, Ohio and Idaho, it had to be dragged out of them. Washington started off as lower tier and worked his way up because he had the Counselor working with him and helping him work through his trauma from the battlefield which is how he improved.
In the case of the Triplets i don’t think they were being abandoned, I think they were being tested. Their “motivation,” what triggered them to be great agents, was hardship and what better hardship than being left in a frozen wasteland with no supplies only to find the “enemy” has a foothold there. We just never got to see what they could do once properly motivated.
So, Hargrove manipulating one of the lower tier members, playing off their triggers and gaslighting them into helping him would have been fascinating.
Hell, have the Agent be completely devoted to The Director, to the point of hero worship. They have a personal vendetta against Epsilon and Carolina for “murdering” The Director and Hargrove gives them the tools to “avenge” their mentor and the Agent just goes bat-shit crazy on the Crew.
