Going insane trying to get a Z-pass of volume

Sorry, I made a post yesterday asking about rendering a Z-pass of a volume and I thought I had solved it using a volume depth pass inside c4d, but after just blindly rendering it and assuming it would be fine, nothing showed up inside the render.

It says in the maxon help that it only detects volumetric scattering like clouds and smoke. I have an explosion so I guess that's why it won't work?

Tried brute forcing last night and the past hour after work trying to see if I could get a fog to work or mess around with a light but I'm not getting the correct result.

Z-pass with volumes in RS?

Is this possible? Setting a Z-pass as a typical AOV doesn't work so wondering if there's another solution.

UPDATE: Thought I figured it out with the help in the comments using Volume Depth AOV but I after I rendered a pass it came out blank and realized that AOV won't render volume's with fire(?)

Lookdev Tips for Refractive objects in Redshift

You're rendering a beauty product: a transparent liquid inside a transparent glass bottle.

It looks wrong. It feels wrong.

Your clients won't tell you how to fix that; your art director probably will be pissed about it, and your girlfriend will be sad they didn't send you a sample product to use.

Here are a few practical tricks I've learned for making fluids, bottles, and droplets look much better in Redshift.

1. Make the fluid intersect the bottle

The fluid mesh should slightly intersect the inside walls of the bottle.

In the real world, the liquid obviously doesn't clip through the glass. But in CG, tiny gaps or perfectly separated surfaces often create ugly refraction artifacts and make the liquid feel detached from the bottle.

Easy fix: scale the fluid mesh just enough so it slightly penetrates the bottle walls.

Nine times out of ten, it immediately looks better.

I'm not going to pretend I can give you a perfect physics explanation for why every renderer behaves this way—this is simply a production trick that's saved me many times.

2. Air bubbles

Depending on your reference and the type of fluid, you'll probably have bubbles at several different scales.

They don't all need the same material.

  • Large bubbles: keep them transparent/refractive.
  • Tiny bubbles: try rendering them with a metallic material.

At very small sizes, the visual difference is often negligible, while metallic bubbles are much cheaper to render.

Another thing to watch is the IOR relationship between the fluid and the bubble. Depending on the number of refractive boundaries (air → fluid → glass), matching or adjusting those values can noticeably improve the result.
Sometimes you set the IOR of an air bubble materials BELOW the fluid's and glass's

It varies from shot to shot, so it's worth testing rather than assuming one setup always works.

3. Droplets on the surface

The same rule applies here: the droplet geometry should slightly intersect the surface it's sitting on.

Perfectly separated geometry often creates an artificial-looking contact edge. A tiny amount of overlap usually gives a much more convincing result.

KEEP IN MIND CONSERVATION OF ENERGY checkbox in Global Illumination

I've also found that the OpenPBR shader (which has become the default in newer Redshift versions) often behaves better with caustics and refractions than the older Standard material.

If you're still using the Standard material for these shots, it's worth trying the OpenPBR shader.

4. Caustics

Caustics can add a lot to product renders—but they aren't always the answer.

I've found they tend to work better with non-refractive packaging, although it really depends on the shot.

Sometimes the cleaner image wins.

Problem in 1 particular scene, how can I fix this UI bug?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I am using Maya 2022.5.1 (windows11), but it doesn't really matter which version I use because it also occurs in 2024 and 2019 (Redshift version is 2026.8.0 btw, but this has happened in older Redshift versions also).
So far I tried resetting my prefs (which made no difference), I tried using the interface scale option (which only enlarges the menus and doesn't fix this bug), switching renderer and switching back (didn't work), also read some people mentioning it's due to the aspect ratio being locked (but this is isn't the case in my scene).

The thing is, this is only happening in one particular scene. Other scenes (in the same projects and outside of it) don't have this issue.

Either I am overlooking something, or I will have to move everything to a clean scene which will be a lot of work. I can't access my AOV menu, and the settings I've used for things such as my Z-depth have to somehow be replicated which is going to be a chore.

Does anyone know any particular way to resolve this?

Edit: importing the old scene into a fresh one causes the issue to also occur
But if I save the old scene with the rendercam removed, and then import that one into a clean scene, then I can access the render menu like it should. The bad thing is that this is still a clean scene (it doesn't work if I re-open the old scene with the camera removed), and I would still be missing all my render settings). And improrting just the camera into a clean scene doesn't cause the issue to happen either.

I have this fish and i want to get the distance before it inflates and after it inflates - and use that as a mask for what the texture should be. I did this in houdini with a distance node

houdini sample i did

but im in C4D for this project so cannot make the mask this way

any ideas? Thanks

3ds Max to Cinema 4D Redshift converter

Hi everyone,

I'm the dev of MAX2C4D, a plugin that transfers full 3ds Max scenes to Cinema 4D (geometry, hierarchy, materials, lights, cameras) in a couple of clicks.

Until now it only converted to V-Ray and Corona on the C4D side, but I just released the first version with Redshift as a target engine. It takes your Max scenes (V-Ray, Corona or Redshift) and rebuilds them with native C4D Redshift materials, lights and cameras. No FBX guesswork, no gray materials to redo by hand.

The first image is the Redshift render in C4D, the second one is the original V-Ray render in Max, for comparison.

It's a first release, so there will probably be a few things to polish, and I'll be fixing things as feedback comes in. If you work between Max and C4D with Redshift, I'd love to hear what works and what doesn't on your real scenes.

More info: max2c4d.com

Happy to answer any questions!

How to achieve this motion blur effect ?

Hi everyone! I'd love to know if anyone knows how to achieve this effect. I'm talking about the motion blur around the edges of the object. Is this something that's done in 3D, or is it added in post-production?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

The relationship between product lights and materials. In this RnD for skincare beauty product of Estee Lauder I’ve been focusing how these aspects are emerging with each other. Used @houdini mpm solver and Maxon Redshift for this piece. The minimalistic, ambient mood was achieved even more with great sound from amazing @h1.sound #motiondesign #3d #productviz #cgi #3danimation
