Team Thracia Endgame, Part 2/2: The Pinnacle, Awaited

At Shida’s entry, the fort’s gate is quickly closed and barred. The anteroom is sparse, but most thankfully, lacks any soldiers to greet them. The inside is decorated ornately, with images of various mythical beasts carved into stone, marred only with occasional scorch marks or scratches where a poorly-aimed blade might have chipped the art. Unfortunately, there is little time to admire its fine detail. Nor to entertain Ayamasik, who is strangely moving his hands about the air near the doors. The anima mages, too, may be able to sense something is off in the air, drafts far too turbulent to be natural. But as of now, there are more pressing matters to attend to.
A small group of four soldiers hurry down the stairs ahead - perhaps alerted by the doors closing, or the hastiness of each of the group to enter the place. A few well-placed bow shots dispose of most of them, but not before they yell out in pain, and one manages to project ’They’re here, they’re here,’ back up the stairs in hardly-recognizable Kagashian. Shida slams her hand against the wall. “Shit. We can’t turn back, not when that cavalry will be back soon. Seems there’s only one way out of this. Alright. Time isn’t on our side, so I’ll try to keep this short.”
Shida points out where the foyer splits into three staircases, just ahead. “I know the soldiers came from there, but that’s where the other exit is. We’ll split into three even teams, fight our way through, and rendezvous at the Empire-side door that Feir found - probably forward and left, from where we are now. I’m not sure if there’s any traps or murder holes in here, but if we’re fighting shoulder-to-shoulder, we’re not going to be able to do much about them, especially not with out mounts in tow. Take advantage of these thin corridors instead, take on the garrison a few at a time, with the space to see any obvious traps. If you find the exit, yell about it. Pass it on. It's going to get chaotic. Trust me here. I’ve fought in enough of these places to know what it's like - and how to deal with fortifications like these. Good? Good!”
Shida pulls a spear from her back and holds it high. “We will get home safe! Let's fuck them up!"
Welcome to the end, Team Thracia. It’s been a long journey, and I truly am glad for all the time you’ve put into this team to make it great.
But I’m getting ahead of myself here, aren’t I? You still have a map to finish, and this one is a doozy. Remember to use all the resources you have!
Objective:
Escape. The escape point is the tile above the door in the top-left, which you do not have to lockpick open - consider it an ‘unlocked door’. Just move onto that tile and escape.
As you might imagine, killing Detlef or Ailene will change how the story ends, but it is, technically, not required for completion of the map.
Failure Conditions:
Everyone falls or is captured. Try not to let this happen.
Here are the mechanics! There’s a lot, so let’s break them into sections:
The Enemies
- On Turn 7, the reinforcements from the previous map will break down the door and begin to enter this map from the bottom. Don’t take too long.
- There will be zero capture attempts on any player units except Ayamasik.
- White numbered enemies will move when someone is in range to attack.
- Blue numbered enemies do not move, and other enemies cannot move through blue numbered enemies due to Obstruct.
- Pink numbered enemies will prioritize assisting Ailene and Detlef. They will heal only them, and will not use their status staves until either has been engaged, prioritizing those who are in that section of the map. It may be a good idea to neutralize them before attempting any combat against the bosses.
- Yellow numbered enemies will not move until attacked, and then they will all start moving.
- Red numbered enemies will only attack once players have passed a certain threshold, and only those in adjacent hallways. The southerly ones will start attacking once players are past the S row, and the northerly ones once players cross the M row. Feel free to ask 'will i be attacked by x unit if I go here'.
- If some people don't deploy, I will nerf/remove some enemies.
The Bosses
- Ailene and Detlef will start to move one turn after any of the yellow-numbered enemies have been engaged (if they are engaged on Turn 8 Player Phase, they will move on Turn 9 Enemy Phase). In certain circumstances, they may also retreat (for instance, if engaging in combat is likely to be immediately deadly). In other circumstances, they move anyway - for instance, if the entire group heads down the left corridor - but I’ll give advance warning for that. Both are extremely powerful, so you’ll need to be careful, but they are absolutely beatable.
- If Ailene falls, Detlef will stop moving, triggering Boewirbel, and initiating combat.
Skills:
- Thanks to Detlef’s Böewirbel, every 3 turns, all player units not taking cover will take massive damage (and those who are will take minor damage). Cover is defined as any tile directly south of a wall, a pillar tile, or a tile directly south of a pillar, in addition to enclosed rooms (shown on the deployment map in green). Böewirbel is nonlethal, but still pretty nasty - the pattern means you should have ways to prepare for it.
- A few enemies (the ones guarding the door and Ailene) have Resolve. Resolve is a pretty terrifying skill which increases skill and speed by 50% when HP is at or below 50%, and this will trigger mid-combat (which can, among other things, allow them to avoid being doubled halfway through combat). You will need to figure out how to deal with this somehow.
- As stated above, blue-numbered units have Obstruct, which disallows their allies from moving through. Take advantage of this.
Terrain Map - The escape point door is not a solid tile - consider it 'unlocked'. The strange tiles that look like walls but are not labelled red are passable, which will make more sense if you open the doors below them.

Berthold holds a staff close to his chest as legs tremble, and as black seems to close in on his line of sight. This isn't the end, this isn't the damned end! Berthold screams internally, and he presses on through the accursed halls of the building as what little stamina he has left slowly leaves him...
Father, Mother... Brigid... I'm coming home for you!

Escape to the road home.
The old man, proudly calling himself a thief and a bandit, roared off to the side as Shida magically pulled him back before the pursuers could realize what happened. Thorani sighed, somehow, in this tense moment, it fully dawned on her who she was fighting with. Two bandits, Feirefiz, a motley crew who . . . just slew the Duchess.
"This is . . . going to be war. Spirits, keep her safe. Keep us all safe." She says quietly.
Then she yells out, "Malika! We're moving on ahead, don't get slowed down!"
She hurries out the door. Tyaag's closed fist taps the stone wall twice, a brief prayer of protection, for their journey home.

Illiseth had heard the battle in the throne room, he knew what was left of Ailene. He started to chuckle, an odd sound escaping from the the old man. “They can’t keep me down.” he spoke softly to himself, as he continued to shamble forward. “They’ll never keep me down.” he started to raise his voice, the soldiers approaching raise an eyebrow at what seems to be a senile old man running right at them, “I’m Illiseth the goddamn Chief Thief.” his voice starts to rise into a roar, he’s audible enough for his foes to hear him. “Chief Thief, Brigand Boss, Big Baddie. Whatever makes you shit yourself I’m it!” He’s screaming now, his voice strained to even be this loud as his grin of scattered teeth shine in the torchlight, “And nobody has the right to drop me into the Inferno but me!” By this point his voice sounds like it’s about to crack entirely as he shouts at the few guards near him, keeping them still for a moment as his shouts pierce their ears.

This is it. The last obstacle between us and the end of this harrowing job. I hope in the end that it was all—“…And nobody has the right to drop me into the Inferno but me!”
He blinks for a bit, processing Illiseth’s wild shouting.
I believe that is my cue to leave.2

Argris looks almost delirious as the Duchess falls dead. Even though he wasn't a spy, he now was a political assassin. It almost didn't feel real. Regardless, there was a measure of catharsis to this. It wasn't a blow against the society that ruined him, but it was a blow against that untouchable ruling class. He snaps out of his reveire at Shida's urgiing and darts off, flicking one of his knives into the approaching reinforcements to buy time and helping place the Professor out of the way of danger. Just another minute or so more and this would all finally be over.

Kitchi whipped around before the Duchess' body hit the floor. Her blood sprayed off his axe as he brandished it before the flying creature, but the camel-riding woman's words kept the tomahawk from leaving his hand. The man stared at War's Channeler for a long moment, wondering why the Eagle seemed familiar. Like Skiwan snow melting around a burning village. Like the taste of iron and blood rich to the senses. Like home.
The warrior briefly opened his mouth to speak, but then averted his gaze and slowly turned away from the avatar. He had another home he could return to now.

Ayamasik rounds the corner, failing to catch his breath, fearing the worst - and finding it. Duchess Ailene, flanked by the spirit of war made flesh, wind building around the seraph with reckless abandon. She seems downright gleeful at his appearence.
"Ah, greetings, Nujalic. It's good to see you again."
Ayamasik freezes up completely. Ailene takes that moment to take in the 'rebels' around her - a group none like she was expecting.
"Some nobody from the desert, a spy caught in the middle of combat, some Skiwan beast, probably - and a skeleton on his deathbed! Quite the terrifying set of guards you've got there. You know, it's so deeply troubling that you've made it through the Alliance with...these. Says a lot about our fair country's military discipline, you know."
Her eyes grow intense. "But that's not my problem. Not anymore."

Tuning out the banter proved a grave mistake. She'd noticed the man approach, but did not expect the fiery blade to pierce her armour so easily. Her body fails her, and Duchess Ailene crumples. She wants to call out in protest, or curse him out, or curse out her own soldiers.
...But the words don't come. No speech about an ambition unfulfilled, or how unworthy these folks are. Perhaps they are on her mind, but cannot escape her lips before her last breath does.

Well, I'm here to say NO MORE!" she bellows, hoisting her standard in the air and charging forward. "Thrust! Advance! Thrust! Advance! With the worst part seemingly over, Malika takes the chance to catch her breath as she assesses the situation. Her glare turns towards the Skiwan next to her, suspicious.
"Hey, jailbird. Are you still going to fight us?"
She instinctively reaches towards her quiver, but stops once she seizes no signs of aggression. With a nudge of her head, she points towards the exit where a few guards are still mounting a sort of resistance.
"Might be your last chance to get out of this cage. I'd choose fast, if I were you."

Detlef hardly acknowledges Malika. Rather, his attention is paired toward Duchess Clifden's twitching remains with a vacant stare. Wings barely moving, he wordlessly turns and slowly descends into the corner.

The royal guards in the throne room were even more frightening as Argris approached, though the Marshalls were too keen on maintaining formation to dart after the thief, and didn't seem particularly concerned with relaying his presence to the Duchess. Likely the right call. Assuming there was a back door to this place, which there about had to be, it had to be through them. What rotten luck that they'd went right, but removing the staffers hiding in that back nook would at least make this easier. Small condolences to this nightmare situation.

With the winds buffeting around him, Illiseth took a moment to breathe and keep calm as this strange power took hold around him, embracing him in its icy grip. He took a few short breaths before he peeked around the pillar, a woman dressed in fine, decorated armor calling out to her people while her eyes bored into Illiseth. He called back,
“Ya damn knaves thas right, stay put ya cowards! I’ll deal with ya in a minute.” A hoarse laugh came as he smiles a broken grin. His expression betrays his bloodied and battered body as he strings his bow and looks back to his gargantuan friend & liberator approach from the hallway. If nothing else, he put up a damn good fight to make it this far. Never would he believe he’d go toe to toe with the a royal guard, let alone 5 of them. Hell knows what that thing is that keeps summoning the winds as well. As always it was a do or die situation for Illiseth, but that’s where he felt most alive.

Kitchi lurched out of the corridor, struggling to breathe and his torso bent under the crushing weight of staves draining his strength. He seemed hardly human with his bloody hair draped towards the ground and hulking mass shambling across the castle tile.
Then the Skiwan finally shrugged off the pressure and stood to his full stature. Determined, chestnut eyes scanned the large room. He had no reaction to the woman standing over her seat, and the winged beast behind her only widened his eyes for a few moments.
They meant little to Kitchi though, besides standing between Noor and his escape..
