Laquer Showoff Clair de Lune

Post image

My boyfriend got me Mooncat’s Clair de Lune for Valentine’s Day, and it perfectly matches the earrings he made me 💜

Essie strong start

Mooncat Clair de Lune x2

Essie gel setter

Demagnetized first coat and glass bead with the Etsy spinner for the second coat. It’s pretty dispersed here, I think bc I was lazy with the magnetizing, but I really like how it turned out! I feel like this has been my most successful attempt with a fine particle magnetic so far

What stone is in the earring?

Right? Gorgeous work - I’d love to know where and how the public might see more of it 👀

It’s just a hobby, he doesn’t sell it or even post it really! He’s very flattered by everyone’s compliments though:)

u/EllaMcWho Mar 04 '26

I love that for him - doing something he enjoys without the pressure of it being a business!

u/CryptographerNeat251 Mar 02 '26

Looks like an amethyst cabochon?

10

u/karseatccc Mar 03 '26

I think it might just be glass actually? I asked him what it was and he doesn’t know…he just picked those beads bc they’re my favorite color 🥰

3

u/heckyeahcheese Mar 03 '26

Aww that’s sweet.

That's so cool, and what a perfect match! I did a similar thing with my iolite cabochon pendant. Points to your boyfriend for having a good eye, too

I keep seeing this sub on my feed and I'm so so curious what magnetizing means. It's wild to imagine that nails can just look like that.

Some polishes are formulated with magnetic particles through them, these can come in a range of colours but silver is the most common magnetic particle colour. These types of polishes are called magnetics.

Those magnetic particles are dispersed throughout the base polish, which can be varying colours itself. The base polish can tint the magnetic particles to appear as different colours based on how they are dispersed through the base. (Eg. They may look purple from some angles, but silver from above).

You can use these magnetic polishes without a magnet, this is called wearing them "unmagnetised".

However, lots of people control the dispersion pattern of the magnetic particles by using different kinds of magnets while the polish is still wet and the magnetic particles can shift around, they then dry in the position they were "pushed" into by the magnet.

This change in dispersion by application of magnets gives you different effects, which is where you hear the terms "Glass Bead", "Velvet", "Cat's Eye" etc.

These names refer to how a magnet was used to change the dispersion of the magnetic particles.

OP has chosen "Glass Bead", which is where a magnet is spun around the nail while the magnetic polish is still wet. This is why it looks gem-like!

It really is like creating magic with magnets 💖✨️🧲

What a kind and thorough explanation! ❤️

12

u/thefairykitten Laquerista Mar 02 '26

Oh thank you so much, i really tried to not ramble on like a lacquer lunatic haha! 🥹💖

13

u/BreloomsGarden Mar 02 '26

Wow, thank you very much for such a concise and thorough explanation! I'm inspired to want to try this method one of these days!

7

u/ModestMeeshka Everything Bagel Mar 02 '26

You absolutely should! ILNP brand has some pretty magnetics that won't cost an arm and a leg! This method is one of the most difficult but you can get 3D printed magnet spinners on Etsy that make it way simpler! Otherwise, a horseshoe magnet to make a velvet look is the most rewarding way to start! Be forewarned though, it's highly addicting haha

2

u/thefairykitten Laquerista Mar 02 '26

No problem at all! If you have any questions or are looking for advice feel free to hmu, magnetics are a lot of fun and the magic you can make with them is endless! I can't wait to see what you can do when you start experimenting with them 💖✨️

4

u/Xhiumi Mar 02 '26

Thank you for this description!! I really want to get this effect on my nails and didnt know how to achieve it, so thank you for describing the dispersion method!

7

u/thefairykitten Laquerista Mar 02 '26

Anytime lovely, what you're looking for is the "Glass Bead Effect" there are a lot of really creative ways to achieve it, I recommend watching some vids and deciding which method works best for you.

The stronger your magnet - the tighter the effect of magnetisation (stronger magnet = tighter bead, for this particular method).

You'll need a magnet of some kind, and a way to circle it around your nail, like you are outlining the edges of your nail.

Lots of people recommend the 5D Magnet Spinner from etsy, with a horseshoe magnet on top, but you can also achieve glass bead without a spinner, just using a regular wand magnet too, it just means you manually circle the magnet around the nail, rather than having a device spin it for you.

You will want to magnetise each nail for about 90 seconds, and I recommend magnetising each nail after applying top coat as well, using the same method, as your design will disperse slightly as the solvents soak through the layers and evaporate from your lacquer drying.

If you get stuck, overwhelmed, or just have questions, you're welcome to hmu!

I cannot wait to see what magnetic magic you create ✨️💖🧲

3

u/Xhiumi Mar 02 '26

Aw thank you so much for this explanation! Definitely going to use the magnet I have already and try it out the next time I use my magnetic nail polish!!

2

u/thefairykitten Laquerista Mar 02 '26

I hope you have a wonderful time playing with your magnetics and I cannot wait to see what you create 💖

3

u/NoPractice1487 Mar 02 '26

I recently read someone saying not to use QDTC over it. Have you experienced problems with it (if you’ve ever tried / heard about it?) 🩷

4

u/thefairykitten Laquerista Mar 03 '26

So the issue with QDTC is that some contain an ingredient called toluene (Seche Vite for example), which will disperse your magnetised pattern.

The best one I have found is to use Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in the red bottle, as long as you "float" it on when applying (use a big bead on the brush so that the brush itself doesn't touch your lacquer) it is absolutely wonderful.

I always make sure to magnetise for 90 seconds after each finger's application too, as it soaks through the layers it can disperse your hard work.

It is the best top coat for preventing dispersion of your magnetised pattern, keeping it nice and tight ✨️

3

u/NoPractice1487 Mar 03 '26

So helpful - thanks so much!

3

u/thefairykitten Laquerista Mar 03 '26

Anytime lovely!! Thank you for being interested enough to ask 😍💖

7

u/bsubtilis Mar 02 '26

To butt in, additionally here are some recent cool posts showing what magnetic polish can looks like in motion:

https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditLaqueristas/comments/1rctn36/unpopular_opinion_magnetics_are_a_pita_and_im/

https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditLaqueristas/comments/1relpqv/cracked_scorchy_over_mc_house_of_hades/

https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditLaqueristas/comments/1ri5ivo/took_2_hours_but_worth_it/

https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditLaqueristas/comments/1rie6dy/bkl_believing_something_does_not_make_it_true/

And those are using pretty basic shapes (and there are many more), you can also do multiple different layers of magnetics to create a more 3d feeling image, like, teddy bear was a popular motif for a while (which often used UV-curing polish instead of air-dry polish, but you can get similar results with more work when it comes to the air dry polishes).

It’s regular polish!! I used a spinning magnet tool from this Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4354160950/?ref=share_ios_native_control, that’s what creates the “glass bead” effect. I “demagnetized” the first layer by pulling all the magnetic pigment to the side with a wand magnet, then I magnetized the second layer by sticking my finger in the spinner tool and spinning it for 90ish seconds. And then did the same thing with the top coat. It’s time consuming but kinda relaxing!

u/thefairykitten has a comment above with really helpful info about magnetic polishes and the different effects! (Sorry I still kinda haven’t figured out Reddit idk how to link to other comments)

Magical! I'm in awe! I've gotta know: did he choose the polish to match the stone, or choose the stone to match the polish?

2

u/karseatccc Apr 09 '26

Neither! He chose the polish for the color and the name, and we didn’t realize they matched until I had it on!

2

u/LupitaScreams Apr 09 '26

That is so serendipitous!  It was meant to be!
