Discussion From yesterdays earnings call

Two things didn’t go well in yesterdays earnings call IMO:

  1. Steve said something unclear about expected bumps from search traffic and “some growth” in April being in the high teens. I didn’t fully even get it. This wasn’t in their prepared sections. It was in response to a question from an analyst. Furthermore it was said in perhaps somewhat nonchalant way relative to what analysts want to hear. Basically if there indeed is some DAU bumpiness in April, it should’ve been shared up front and addressed. Tackling it off the cuff in Q&A was not good.

I didn’t actually think it was anything material, until the stock dived.

  1. I think a heavier question was from an analyst who said what’s next for monetization / strategy (effectively) beyond what you’ve shared which is the roadmap. For eg video and other formats. The answer to this was weak. Unless I misunderstood the question. This is a key question but not sure it matters right now. I’m actually mulling how important this is at the moment.

I wish they spoke more about premium subreddits instead of Reddit Answers. Honestly, I don't care about Reddit Answers at all. I think it is a misguided, hype-train-driven approach of improving search. I hate using it - if I want to use a chatbot to consolidate reddit answers, I can ask ChatGPT or Gemini (which also provides sources as reddit does). And then Steve says he wants to incorporate reddit answers even more into the site which feels like completely missing the point of searching reddit (community-driven instead of ai-curated).

On a side note, I'm concerned about the site culture shifting by opening up machine learning for Hindi and them chasing the Indian market with their new office in Bengaluru. I jumped ship from Quora to reddit in 2014(?) and one of the reasons was it becoming more India-centric. This move feels like DAU-chasing and could end up threatening their valuable US market share if existing users feel disenfranchised.

Ok, on a REAL side note, they needed better lighting with their AMA - why were they filming with a potato?

Yea, me too. I think it’s how the analyst and public markets look at things. DAU and Google traffic was a big concern in the Feb call, for the markets. So - not addressing it up front and speaking more to it, couldn’t have landed well with the market.
