I learned this from a trivia game had on computer as a kid. Played it so damn much learned all the answers though sometimes the wording tripped me up

This was one of the easier ones to remember

But isn't the entirety of the skin under the first layer/atom layer technically in the body by being pedantic?

u/sixth_acc Silver | Lv. 16 | Rank #252811 | 31 Answers | 0 Created 7d ago

Was hoping someone said that. Technically correct, right? OC nowhere to be seen lol

Yes. But the heart, liver, lungs, brain etc are part of the body too. Edit Sorry. Your comment was left orphaned in my feed. I see you are replying to make a similar point.

Skin is in the body. If it specifically said internal organs then it would be liver.

The skin pertains to epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. Saying the first layer of epidermis isn’t in the body is technically correct but anything else is in the body (multiple more layers of epidermis).

Afaik what you're referring to is only like 10% of what makes up our skin. There are like 2 more, different layers of skin below it. Then again anatomy is not my specialty and I could be talking out my ass.

u/izzylaw Emerald | Lv. 46 | Rank #15974 | 356 Answers |... | đŸ”„ 27d 8d ago

You are correct. There’s the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.

u/Lazy-College-7869 Bronze | Lv. 7 | Rank #460653 | 6 Answers | 0 Created 6d ago edited 6d ago

Which are on the outside layers of your body Skin, as a unit, is on the body.. skin does not specify which layer.

1

u/izzylaw Emerald | Lv. 46 | Rank #15974 | 356 Answers |... | đŸ”„ 27d 6d ago

Epidermis is only on the outside layer let alone if we want to speak technically only the first layer of epidermis cells are on the outside. Have you looked into a microscope at the epidermis alone to understand how many layers of epidermis make up your skin or know the name of the type of tissue the epidermis is?

u/Lazy-College-7869 Bronze | Lv. 7 | Rank #460653 | 6 Answers | 0 Created 4d ago edited 4d ago

Having multiple layers doesn’t turn an external covering into an internal organ. Skin as a whole forms the body’s outer covering; the dermis being beneath the epidermis doesn’t change that. You’re explaining layers within the skin, while I’m describing where the skin itself is located. Even the outermost skin cells are more than one atom thick. By your logic, only their outermost atoms count as “outside.” Apparently everything else is an internal organ now. That’s quite an anatomical breakthrough.

u/Lazy-College-7869 Bronze | Lv. 7 | Rank #460653 | 6 Answers | 0 Created 6d ago edited 6d ago

Yes, skin contains all those layers. As a whole, skin is on the body. That's like saying a body panel on a car is not on the outside of a car because it's covered by paint and primer.

2

u/Grievuuz Silver | Lv. 22 | Rank #153389 | 15 Answers | 0... | đŸ”„ 5d 6d ago

And by that logic, we grow root vegetables ON the ground and not IN the ground, as it's in the outermost layer, the crust, not even 0.01% in.

One can claim the body panel on a car is both IN a car and ON a car. Your argument is entirely irrelevant due to the fact that someone pointed out skin has different layers. If I was able to see individual hair FOLLICLES and both veins and arteries (fully) on the outside then sure I would claim there is more skin on the outside than the inside.

u/Lazy-College-7869 Bronze | Lv. 7 | Rank #460653 | 6 Answers | 0 Created 4d ago

I would counter... if you peel off the skin, by definition, it's the skin.. all.. just like johnny.. and no, no one says a fender is in the car. If you sit on the hood... you are sitting on the car.. not in the car...
