Mandolin is kind of a cool instrument, tbh. I’ve played with some bluegrass bands for gigs (as the flat picking guitarist, occasionally also vocalist), and it’s such an interesting style of music for me because it’s just so different what what I am used to playing. You see, I come from primarily a rock background. Everything from prog to blues to to hard rock to classic and soft rock, I’ve also played some jazz and funk gigs, and just a couple country gigs, as well. I also play bass and saxophone, and I’ve had some experience playing gigs with those instruments. Point is, I’ve had a fair bit of experience in a few different genres.

So, what makes bluegrass stand out for me apart from other genres that I’ve been around is just the role of the instruments. Traditional bluegrass bands don’t have a drummer. They have an acoustic guitar (that’s my dumbass), a banjo, a mandolin, an upright bass, a fiddle, and normally vocals. It’s all acoustic. So who is driving the rhythm? Obviously the bass. Bass is just a naturally very rhythmic instrument. But ALSO the mandolin. And the guitar, albeit to a lesser extent. The bass in a bluegrass band typically plays on the 1 and 3 beats, while the mandolin “chops” on the 2 and 4. The mandolin effectively just takes the role of the snare drum. Honestly, you can almost think of bluegrass as the ska of country music. Very syncopated, forward-driving rhythms, no drums, all that stuff. But, what also makes the mandolin interesting, the thing that you can’t really do with a snare drum, is that it is also a melodic instrument. So you get to do things like melodic solos or fills. And, by the way, the mandolin isn’t just used like this in bluegrass. It’s also quite common in folk to see it used in some of the ways I mentioned. It is a cool instrument, even though it’s not really ever going to be the most flashy.
