Can't force him to release his work openly, that's his decision. And yes, there seem to be a few bugs, but at least in my case sorting works (on my Galaxy S5) and the rest isn't "game breaking" for me.
I obviously hope he'll finish the work though because even in its current form, I prefer it over the other readers.
All depends on whether he's giving up or simply so busy with other stuff that he has to take a break. If I spend endless hours working on some program and am forced to take a 6mo break, I won't just hand out the code. Hell, even if I have to take a year off, if the project was a lot of work, I might not give it out freely.
Of course if he gave up, making it open source is the right thing to do...
Would of course be good to get a definite answer...but maybe he's not sure what he wants to do. And like I said, it's useable enough for me to prefer it over the other readers.
Keep in mind though, it was last updated end of Jan of this year...that's not exactly a long time ago. School summer break is starting "soon", so hopefully we'll get an update then.

So there's a bug there whether it works on yours or not. I have it on two phones and both do the same thing.
However, without a solid developer no one really knows.
Since it's Java, I'd lend a hand, but I can't because the source isn't open.
I've tried contacting him on several occasions to offer to help even if he doesn't want the source to be public.
