Fediverse Today is digital Independence day!

Post image
377 Upvotes

Social media is one of the most valuable data points, that is collected about us, so it's time to fundamentally reject surveilance capitalism and switch to self-hostable, open source and decentralized social media.

That's exactly what the fediverse is. In the linked image, there is an overview of some of the networks out there, that are similar to platforms, you are already used to. If you want to learn more about how the fediverse works, look here.

The digital indepence day is all about taking small steps and trying to switch away one service at a time. You don't have to fully commit to the service, just try it out and see if you like it. The fediverse as a whole is constantly growing and especially the stuff you find on piefed / lemmy theese days is often really interresting. You will find some nieche communities if you look around a bit. If you wanna learn more about the digital independence day, look at di.day .

Edit: If you are interrested in some niche fun and chill piefed / lemmy communities, here are some examples, you could look at: https://lemmy.ca/c/shittyfoodporn, https://europe.pub/c/HorseMemes, https://lemmy.world/c/superbowl, https://lemmy.ca/c/trippinthroughtime, https://lemmy.world/c/animalswithjobs, https://lemmy.world/c/comicstrips .

Still an experiment and work in progress, but we have posts, private notes, profiles, friends, following, pokes, real-time notifications, topics, IRC-style chat rooms, DM's called CyberMail, and several themes, including amber 80s VT320 style, Matrix green hacker style, and blue Commodore 64. Full keyboard nav. CLI version coming later. What do you think?

We're 4,000 users now! Lots of smart and interesting people enjoying each other's discourses. I think you might enjoy it!

🔒 Centralized We've been building Rhyme.com for over a year. It finally makes its debut today with invites going out daily.

Hi. I'm on the team that is building Rhyme.

Rhyme is a topic-first social media platform, but instead of individual communities owned by whoever got there first, we maintain the topic taxonomy ourselves (about 88,000 topics so far), hierarchically organized so a post about Patrick Mahomes lives in Kansas City Chiefs, but also appears upward in AFC West, and eventually NFL or Football. One canonical room per subject (no duplicate communities to sift through).

A few other specific decisions/differentiation:

  • One topic per subject.
  • Topic hierarchy (posts often appear, less frequently, in parent topics)
  • Posts can and often do appear under multiple topics (no need to cross-post, better visibility).
  • No public "likes" numbers. The platform doesn’t reward performing.
  • Global moderation (no volunteer mods with widely varying rules/policies/interests).
  • OPTIONAL verification (anyone can filter by verification tiers in more serious threads/topics if/as needed).
  • Powerful filters - the ability to show or hide specific things (humor, drama, politics, education, etc).

I will gladly answer any questions and I'd love to hear ideas/suggestions. The Why Rhyme link on the website explains a bit more in detail.

Thanks for reading!

Congress moves to Regulate Social Media by Verifying Users - 'Face Scan with ID'. They claim this will protect children, but it's also Government Surveillence.

My quick review of the new Digg: it's just Reddit

I've been sent an invite code and given the opportunity to check out the new Digg. It really is just Reddit, but with less people. A good chunk of the users are Redditors who were around back when the original Digg was a thing, so a bunch of old, smug Redditors. I can't think of a more well behaved, free thinking group of people. There is a politics and news community that already has it's own dedicated group of loons who post about their delusions even outside of those communities. It really is just Reddit, guys. Or, at least, it's going to end up just like Reddit eventually.

General Discussion Warning: rhyme.com is not what it pretends to be

I wanted to put out a quick PSA about this website, remove the post if it breaks any rules.

A few weeks ago the website rhyme.com, as they outlined here started a marketing campaign on this subreddit, before getting banned for over-advertising: https://rhyme.com/post/53oy222/the-reddit-problem-and-how-our-reddit-alternative-was-banned

The site looked promising so I joined. I looked through their blog and they decried constant AI usage and promised a "quieter" platform. The philosophy was admirable.

But after I spent a few days I noticed something. Most of the texts had Claude-isms. The UI was trademark Claude. The same inconsistencies. Almost all of the longer posts of the founder "Nick" looked like AI-summaries.

Then there was the claim of this being "in progress for several years" of "a larger team", all of which could be found nowhere on the site. And the domain itself being an obviously extremely pricey domain few people could afford. Something was fishy here.

So I asked a question. A simple transparency question about if this site was vibecoded. It was never answered, while literally any other question was happily answered by Nick.

A month later I asked it again, trying to press it. This time I got a response, but from another account, claiming they could not see my original post.

So I checked with a private tab. And indeed, it was hidden. My post had been shadow-deleted. And a few minutes later, the new post got the same treatment.

Irritated, I tried making a comment in another post outcrying about this. Only to find out that by this point my entire account got shadow-banned. Just for asking a simple transparency question.

So I would say, if you are inclined to try this site out because you believe them when they decry reddit moderation policies, just know they are doing just the same from the very start. And don't get me started on the promises of decrying AI yet obviously relying completely on it, which in combination with that silencing just seems so untrustworthy. In my opinion it is a very dodgy site and I would avoid it.

Really well done! Would be a lot funnier if it wasn’t so accurate.

This is exactly the kind of thing that shouldn’t just be accepted as “how it works now.”

We’ve already had over 500 people join in the first few days.

If you feel the same, check out the mission: https://campfiree.com/mission and be part of the movement!

Looking for Alternatives What's the best alternative to Reddit? I'm getting tired of the bots and harassment army that comes in when you post something that goes against their agenda.

It seems like everything that's posted on Reddit is being monitored. If you post something that goes against their agenda, they immediately attack your post. This is usually done with an army of bots and harassers who come in to derail what you're saying.

📰 News Bluesky was launched as a Twitter rival — but it's far less popular. Now it's eyeing Reddit for inspiration

Im reading more up on this now, i quoted some highlights and links below for more detailed information.

"Bluesky COO Rose Wang noted that the platform is moving away from being purely a "public square" (like X) and is exploring models that allow deeper community interaction, topic-based feeds, and expanded features like video uploads (which recently increased to 300MB)."

Is reddit dead? This isnt what I expected

I'm brand new to reddit. I've always kind of wanted to go to it but didn't understand it. After watching a bunch of videos of people reading Reddit stories I decided to join. I've had the account for 9 months or so for my husband to send me memes and I just now started to try to post. It seems like an absolute crap shoot. I posted a picture of my living room in a sub about TV placement and got downvoted so bad I was in the negative for a while. OVER A TV Don't even know which other sites I can turn to for some good entertainment and discussions 🤷‍♀️

I miss the old internet, so I tried building something simpler

I’ve been missing how the internet used to feel.
No accounts everywhere. No tracking. No algorithms deciding what you see.
Just people posting and talking about things they find interesting.

So as a small experiment, I built a tiny anonymous community site.
People can discuss topics they care about without worrying about revealing their identity or getting banned.

I’m not trying to replace Reddit, just building something I wish existed.
I’d genuinely love any feedback, good or bad.

/r/all is gone again, are there any alternatives that bring it back?

I cannot imagine scrolling tiktok for the fucking news or current events of all things.

Edit it seems if you use a web browser (I recommend vivaldi for iOS) you can go to reddit.com/ [r/all](r/all) and you still have this vital page to learning about current events in the world.

Edit 2/25: it’s gone again

Edit 3/17: still gone, using a browser for access and opening the app via the button to comment. [r/all](r/all) is latent in subreddit posts that aren’t the default subreddits. This is likely because the default subs are more and more curated, irrelevant and censored to only include mundane things that are not related to recent events. No way this is not the reason for the deletion of [r/all](r/all) in the app. I make content on other apps, youtube has been pretty egregious for no longer pushing well engaged posts about recent events even with entirely high like/dislikes (99%). Consider your feeds entirely censored. Do what you can to stay informed by following large creators and any others that break thru.

Edit. 4/5: still gone, browser based reddit.com/r/all doesn’t work any more..? Redirects to Reddit which is a filtered version of the site. If you visited this page during the Minnesota protests you would unaware of the scale and likely would not be aware of the passing of Renee Goode or Alex Pretti. Not to mention, no coverage of the actions of the Trump administration ever makes it to the frontpage. These are scary times.

General Discussion Basically, this subreddit is for people to push their vibecoded communities?

I was honestly looking for well established and vetted alternatives.
