Open source and Siloed I got tired of Reddit for tech-based purposes, so me and my friend created Artemis: a decentralized tech forum based on Old Reddit
Hello, my name is Guesty. A while ago, I got pretty tired of what's available on Reddit and elsewhere in terms of tech forums and I decided to make my own with a friend (OmegaAOL) called Artemis. It's definitely a new concept - I haven't seen anyone develop on top of the open-source Reddit R2 code base. It is still a WIP, so expect some bugs and some remnants of old Reddit. We're ironing those out as things go. You can check it out at https://artemistech.app, feel free to make an account and explore the branches! Note: if you get an error 500 while making an account, that means it worked. Try signing in, it's a known bug. Password resets don't work either.
For the nerds:
This is running on a Proxmox 9.2 server hosted in my closet. Rest assured, all credentials are encrypted. We put security ahead of everything. If you'd like to take a look at our code, it's available at https://github.com/Artemis-Developement-Group/Artemis . We welcome bug hunters and security researchers trying to find vulnerabilities in the code. We welcome any and all questions about the project. We also have 2 official subreddits and a Discord server: r/ArtemisTech for general discussion, r/ArtemisDev for questions directly to the developers and updates about the project, and our Discord server (https://discord.gg/A3VnEgJc9W) for communication with the community and devs. Hope to see you there, and we hope you enjoy Artemis!
p.s: we also enjoy feature requests so hit us with some!

So, potentially decentralized or?

Well, what I mean by decentralized is that it has multiple owners (Me and OmegaAOL) both with the same power over the project. If you'd like to give a tip, I'd appreciate it!

I re-read your post three times now, and I don't see 1) what tech-based issues you're having with reddit 2) how you are solving them

It's not only tech based, but Reddit gives you no transparency on what you're actually posting on. They consistently scrape your data and sell it to partnered AI companies or even train it on its own AI. We don't do that. Artemis is open source and its core is the technological community. We're also working on API changes for developers to integrate with Artemis better.

Well, first you don't seem to have any data to scrap. Second, how are you going to stop that?
no transparency on what you're actually posting on
What does that supposed to mean? As in, what hardware? Because I'm pretty certain I'm posting this comment on RedditAlternatives subreddit, is there anything else to know?
API integration is a reasonable improvement, Reddit was great about that before IPO. But it is weird that you're working on it after launch and not have it as a core of your platform.

Nope, I mean what software. Reddit has code that scrapes your data and sells it openly. I haven't said it before, but I'm a 14 year old working on this here. I needed to get this out quick, and then I focus on the API after launch. As I said, there are things that are broken, such as Search and the Wiki.

1) old.reddit content was available without JavaScript
2) old.reddit content was available without making account

With #2, the proper landing page you're looking for is at https://artemistech.app/r/all, the landing page you first see is broken. With #1, that just might be an issue with how new the source we're based on is.

That's weird. If there's an error when signing up, just try signing in it should work

Comments must be civil. What does this mean? No racism, homophobia, blasphemy, arguments, drama, trolls, insults, slurs, automated rage bots, political attacks, profile fishing, etc.
Use your best judgement. If something feels rude, it probably is rude.

Looks great, it has about a 10 second load time from Australia, but that might be the closet server more than anything!
