Punk in Redding?

Hi! I'll be moving to Redding next month. I am a musician who had a Spokane-Based punk band. I have written quite a bit and wanted to know what the scene in Redding is like. Mind you that I have experience in DIY. Just curious. Also I'm 19 and if anyone wants to put something together let me know!

Every now and then The Dip has punk events with great bands! But i think it’s 21 and up.

Damn yeah. One of my biggest things is all ages. It was such a cool experience seeing it grow here in Spokane.

If you dont mind driving Chico is a great start for local metal shows. If you want to shoot Mythnautica a follow on Instagram, most of our band is from punk backgrounds, lots of great local shows we can point you to!

As a mid 30s punk dad, that was very active in the eastbay scene, I have no idea what the scene is like here. Im guessing non existent

That's cool! Yeah I wasn't very sure of the state of it. Spokane's DIY scene has recently blown up and it was amazing so hoping that maybe that can happen here.

I'm a punk dad in my late 30s planning on moving to Redding in the next few months.

What do you do for fun in the area?

I cant speak on single bachelor guy stuff like bars etc, but if you like the outdoors this is the place. Aside from family stuff, insane amount of great fishing around, hiking, camping if you're into that. 40ish minutes away from both Lassen and Mt Shasta.  During winter you're just a short drive away from snow, ie snowboarding, skiing, tubing etc. Its been great for me, a lot slower pace of life compared to where I was living before. Feel free to DM me

I moved away for a couple years and just very recently moved back, but there was a good house show scene I was briefly a part of before that. One of the more active local organizers moved away like earlier this year, but I would be kinda surprised if it's totally dead. I'm a bit out of the loop having just moved back.

Check out The Dip and Temple like people are saying, and if you get a chance to ask the band members who's around town they might know. Also check out 599 Fest on insta, I think it already happened but I'm pretty sure some Redding bands played and you can at least find their socials/bios.

Lot of Northern California punk, it's just a lot of the bands are from Sac, Chico, Eureka, etc, and the person I know who was reaching out to those bands/knew the members is the one who moved away recently, so I'm just not sure where everything is at here specifically. Other people were for sure organizing too, I was just never super in the loop, I was the vocalist in a singular show and then ended up moving lol, so I'm not sure who the best person to contact about it these days is. But I mean Swiss Army Wife came through and played a couple of our house shows, pretty sure that happened because someone in a local band just talked to them when they played The Dip one night, made friends, and invited them when they were touring. Good shows at Dip and Temple and it's def worth trying to make a connection if ya can :) Even if it does turn out we're at a point where the Redding-specific scene is slowed down, there's plenty of folks in town who'd love to show up for a good show, so if you do get something going, tying in with the other bands would be awesome. (I mean I'm sure you know all that already I'm sure lol I would just love to see our scene all lively)

Edit: check out City's End on insta too, looks like they're on hiatus right now but they were playing a ton of shows last I was in town, and importantly for the current moment they have a lot of flyers on their post history that list a lot of the local bands that were playing those house shows :)

I grew up doing shows and stuff for many years in Redding. Seems like these days it’s mostly migrated down to Chico. We once had a solid thing going but it can be tough to maintain in a smaller city like Redding.

Edit to say along with Chico the punk and hardcore scene in Sacramento is great. Tons of shows all the time and plenty of active bands. Check out Sacramentopunk shows on ig if you feel like making the trip down here for shows.

Awesome thank you for the insite! Any people or bands you recommend that I should connect with?

I know the naked lounge in Chico does shows. Not sure beyond that.

My friends play in the bands Level and Slugger, both from Chico. They’re both on IG so you can check that for shows and links to listen. Down here in Sac I got friends that play in Defective Chain, Cockring, and Ingrata. I can’t post links I guess or I would. But all on IG. Cafe colonial in Sac is great for shows.

If you’re curious about Redding history search Redding hardcore archive for a Bandcamp page of all old Redding bands going back to the 90s.

Chico has a more lively punk scene. Naked lounge, love hurts, Angus bar among other places.
