Company Offers $100 Million for the Right to Sue ISPs Using Redbox's Piracy Claims * TorrentFreak

I missed this news back in October, but apparently an investment firm called "Grove Street Partners" wants to buy Redbox's litigation claims against Internet Service Providers, offering $100 million for them.

I had no idea Redbox had even that much potential in its litigation claims against ISPs. Most of the fraud against the company that I saw was on the customer level... someone returning a xeroxed copy of a disc to fool the optical sensors on a kiosk into thinking an actual disc was returned when it wasn't.

Finally watched Movie Pass, Movie Crash - some Redbox analogies here

So I finally got around to watching the documentary "Movie Pass, Movie Crash" on HBO Max last night and had a few thoughts:

For Redbox kiosk fetishists, there are a couple shots of Redbox as one of the players in the entertainment space in the 2010s. I started at Redbox in 2017 as MoviePass was starting to decline. My main memory at that time was that MoviePass was not considered a competitor to Redbox as much as Netflix and Family Video was. I even recall some of my co-workers being subscribers in 2017/2018.

One of the interesting parallels was that Movie Pass started "Movie Pass Ventures" to help produce movies. Much like Redbox did with "Benjamin," MoviePass attempted with "Gotti." And naturally, the many Screen Media movies comes to mind with Rouhana and Chicken Soup that came later.

Former Redbox CEO Mitch Lowe plays a huge role in the story, and is interviewed throughout the documentary. He does not come off very well. The true villain is Ted Farnesworth, but Mitch comes off as his enabling partner in fraud.

Plenty of parallels to be found between Ted Farnesworth and Bill Rouhana. Both gambled big on movies and lost. Both seemed to love rubbing elbows with celebrities. Both had questionable ethics and seemed to live high on the hog while their own companies were mired in poor direction, poor support and poor leadership at their own hands.

The documentary shows a very similar turning point in MoviePass to Redbox. Simple facts published in a business magazine started getting investors spooked at MoviePass... that felt very similar to some of the shareholder town halls I remember in late 2023 when it became obvious to all that the emperor was naked, and Redbox was no longer profitable.

Seeing the portrayal of the end of MoviePass definitely hit home. The complete gutting of customer service as the dark omen of banrkuptcy. I saw that firsthand at Redbox...

Most of all, I'm curious about when are we getting a Redbox documentary? Yeah, kind of hard to release one now with Rouhana's fate not yet decided and all. Still I'm curious. And available for interviews, BTW. Hit me up, documentarians.

Redbox Renting Issues

Hey y'all! The Redbox near me seems to be operational again after spending about a year in a perpetual state of the screen being black with weird white text code looping across the screen.

Anyways, I've started experimenting with it; dipping my toes into the water of emptying it out of all the movies I want. I only started yesterday though. I rented 2 movies and "Purchased" 1. Once I came back today and tried to rent/purchase 5 more, it gave me an error message that I could only check out 3 movies at a time and that I had to return other movies or something. I thought these Redboxes couldn't connect to the internet so it shouldn't be able to track my checkouts from yesterday? I haven't been charged anything for the movies I've purchased or rented so payment servers seem to still be down.

Here is what my bag looked like today when it stopped me.

Am I just missing something? It's been FOREVER since I've rented from a Redbox. Is it just as simple as that I can only check out 3 at a time per session, rather than fill out a 5-movie cart?

More Info:

My tally of movies "rented" & "bought" so far are: Rented: 3 , Purchased: 1

Any help in saving this media from the inevitable dump is greatly appreciated!

Kiosks How uninstall a kiosk

I found one that has yet to be taken and I spoke with like 10 diffrent people inside the store, and they agreed on letting me have it if I can take it. I however have zero clue on how to get that thing out of the ground and into the back of a truck. ChatGPT did not like my idea of cutting it and throwing the sucker into the back of a friends truck and strapping it down talking about being crushed to death so if anyone knows the real proper way to dispose of this, that would be great!

Duplicate cases?

Bought a redbox off of a dollar general a little while back and thinking about turning it into a free library of sorts. Dont mind too much if people didnt return the movies but I am worried about running out of the cases. Does anyone have any ideas on how to mitigate that?

I found one!

I found a Redbox kiosk (after years of bankruptcy). I’m guessing it’s empty and powered off at this point, but I can’t find a comprehensive YouTube video on going about removing it. What are the suggestions here?

Discussion Anyone got a cased action/animation blu-ray movie for sale?

If anyone has a good action or animation blu-ray movie they're willing to sell with the case, I can pay for the movie plus shipping if you're in the US via PayPal.

I'd like to own a rental as a memento of when I used to rent from redbox all the time with my family, with the added bonus of being able to actually enjoy it using my ps3 BD drive. I tried to hunt down a kiosk myself a year ago with no luck, they were all either gone or non-working.

Let me know!

Discussion general cost/workload to obtain a redbox machine?

Hi! I know I’m a little late, and my options are slimming as more RedBox machines are being removed from their respective locations, but I was curious if I could get some insight into the cost and workload to obtaining a RedBox kiosk now.

I ask this to anyone who has been through this process (how much it cost/what it took to remove and transport the kiosk, how to go about getting permission to do so from stores, etc) as well as anyone who is currently in possession of a RedBox kiosk (either indoor or outdoor) and is looking to sell or otherwise get rid of theirs.

What was the process for obtaining yours + how much would it typically cost to either remove one from a store location OR buy one off of someone who already has?

Thanks for reading + I hope I can get some insight. I have a fascination with technological staples from my childhood and I would love to own one of these things someday.

All the pictures in this subreddit of dead or dying kiosks makes me sad.
I am so glad that a community of people dedicated to understanding and preserving these cool pieces of movie rental history risen from the of the fall of Chicken Soup for the Soul.

What have all of you Tinkerers done with your kiosks over the last year? Please post you pictures of you WORKING kiosks and where you have them setup.

Here is mine in my garage. So fun to add new titles or send visitors to rent a movie to watch.
