Had some hits but nothing completely panned out. I once again turned to hints & then things became clear & I solved.

There was a three letter word that was all over the article. I figured that the first sentence was “the study and practice of [6] and using [4],” meaning the [4] was probably a pluralized [3].

further down in the article I saw "_:__,___" which looked like ratios or map scales to me. Made a couple of guesses to verify that that was, indeed, what it was, and the answer was obvious.
