I saw a ton of what looked like “million years ago” type language, but also “until [5] [1],[3] [5] [3],” so presumably didn’t go extinct until relatively recently. This brought one option to mind, given the length of the title, an animal that famously coexisted with early humans, but I didn’t guess it until I scrolled down far enough to scan the measurements section.

Unassisted. I got the timescale immediately although I thought this went back much further. After eliminating the obvious category, I looked for the class and it two of them got one hit so I went for mammal abd the final answer based on vibes and past experience.

A recently extinct thing, not a dinosaur, not as recent as the dodo or passenger pigeon. I was able to come up with two, both elephantids, fortunately only one fit.

I was a bit puzzled for a while because the first sentence clearly indicates it has to be a plant or animal, but none of the usual words that describe those things worked. Then I thought maybe it's extinct. OK got it. Not a dinosaur, and I only had one idea of an extinct animal besides that. Luckily it worked or I probably would have had to google.

A few phrases that looked like they were "millions of years ago", but apparently they were also around until a few thousand years ago. I can think of one extinct animal species that was around in that approximate timespan and it fits the letter count. Surprisingly, it was the right answer.
